Job overview
The Specialist Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian will be responsible for the provision of an effective and efficient Dietetic service to the Paediatric Diabetes service within University Hospitals Plymouth.
The post holder will work as part of a patient-focused multi-professional team and act as a source of Diabetes Dietetic knowledge and expertise for the Paediatric Service. The post-holder will manage their own clinical caseload of patients including patients with Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. The post holder will be adaptable and motivated to develop and run the Dietetic Diabetes service within the Paediatric service throughout University Hospitals Plymouth.
Main duties of the job
* To provide a specialist and comprehensive Dietetic service to patients under the care of the Paediatric Diabetes team at University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP), supporting education of children, young people and their families, and training and educating HCPs on Paediatric Diabetes.
* The post will cover mostly outpatient work; however, ward reviews will be done for new and existing patients admitted to the ward with a new diagnosis of Diabetes or stabilisation.
* To lead and develop the Paediatric Diabetes service to include MDT clinics and delivery of education for those newly diagnosed, working alongside the paediatric diabetes specialist nurse team, diabetologists, psychologist, and pre-existing diabetes service.
To lead service development within Paediatric Diabetes and contribute to the day-to-day running and development of the dietetic service through the promotion, adaptation, and development of policies, procedures, and guidelines using evidence-based practice and current research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Clinical Lead for the Paediatric Dietetic Diabetes Care, including developing the service as required.
* To work as an integrated member of the Paediatric Diabetes MDT.
* Deliver a Diabetes Dietetic service to Paediatric Diabetes Services which is evidence-based, conforms to best practice, is supported by research, and takes into account personal preferences and cultural needs.
* To hold responsibility for own caseload and assist and monitor the caseload of your team as required. To be responsible for planning and organising patient care.
* To undertake comprehensive nutritional assessment of patients with Diabetes, those with raised BMI, or those with Diabetes and coeliac disease or any other diverse or complex nutritional needs and provide education sessions.
* To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner working without direct supervision. Supervision is largely self-driven through seeking advice from Clinical Specialists and peers.
* To undertake training, clinical supervision, and mentoring of junior Dietetic staff.
* Supervise, educate, and assess the performance of Student Dietitians.
* To initiate and undertake evidence-based departmental audit and research projects.
* To assist in the development and update of nutritional education materials, which must be evidence-based considering barriers to communication.
* To continually evaluate outcomes and implement clinical and service changes to optimise outcomes for this group of patients.
* Contribute to financial management of resources by ensuring effective deployment when planning service deployments.
Person specification
Knowledge & Experience
* Significant demonstrable clinical experience of working with patients with a variety of paediatric conditions including diabetes or adults with diabetes.
* Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering training/workshops for other professionals.
* Demonstrable experience of teaching children and young people.
* Completion of Clinical Supervisory Skills Course.
* Demonstrable experience of supporting and supervision of staff/students.
Qualifications
* Degree in Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent.
* Registered as a Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council.
* Proven evidence of CPD relevant to clinical specialty.
* Working towards a master’s level qualification or equivalent postgraduate level qualification/specialist training.
* Membership of the British Dietetics Association and specialist group.
* Competent IT skills including MS Office applications.
* Effective communication skills – able to use various techniques to extract information and motivate clients in difficult/contentious circumstances. To be able to utilise communication and teaching skills to educate the diverse and multicultural population.
* Proven evidence of developing service provision.
