Senior ADHD Specialist Nurse Practitioner (Non-Medical Prescriber)

This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly specialist, multi-disciplinary team providing diagnostic assessments and pharmacological treatment for adults with suspected/diagnosed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We are looking to expand our ADHD pathway to address the increase in demand for ADHD assessment. Our team are passionate about delivering person-centered, strengths-based assessments for neurodivergent individuals.
We would welcome applications from Registered Mental Health Nurses with live NMC Registration and prescribing qualification and specialist knowledge and experience in ADHD assessment. Experience of working in an adult mental health setting is also desirable.
SAANS is a well-established service and has been providing diagnostic assessments for both Sheffield and National residents for over 10 years. We are situated in the leafy suburb of Nether Edge, with free on-site parking and within walking distance of bus services.
While the role will be primarily clinic based, we do offer opportunities for flexible/remote working with options for online assessments in some cases.
Main duties of the job
The Senior ADHD specialist Nurse Practitioner, who is an independent/ supplementary prescriber, will work within the ADHD pathway to provide a specialist clinical assessment and intervention to adults with ADHD.
Assessments will be based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources particularly, but not exclusively, semi-structured interviews and self-report measures. Assessment will also involve identifying alternative or co-occurring neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions. Our standard assessments involve a one-off appointment of up to 3 hours, with the option of MDT discussion and further appointment in complex cases. In this way, the post-holder must be able to work autonomously and have the ability to sustain concentration for extended periods and have excellent communication, time management and organisation skills to ensure diagnostic reports are prepared in a timely manner following assessment.
In addition to assessments, the post-holder will also be responsible for initiating ADHD treatment (pharmacological), titrating and optimising treatment. This will also require writing prescriptions for controlled drugs and other medications where appropriate under the supervision of senior clinical staff within their scope of practice.
Job responsibilities
Clinical
* Perform and monitor comprehensive assessments of clients/services users needs. Plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs. This would include delivering ADHD specific assessments using a standardised and non-standardised ADHD Diagnostic Assessment tools.
* Use advanced skills and expert knowledge to assess the physical, mental health and social needs of a defined client group, instigating therapeutic care plans and treatments based on the best available evidence to improve health outcomes.
* Take continuous management responsibility for the delivery of specialist care needs of individual and groups of clients/services users.
* Ensure patient information is collated, monitored and fully accurate, maintaining complete and contemporaneous records in line with NMC/ professional bodies and Trust standards.
* Promote the involvement and engagement of clients/services users and carer relatives in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care.
* Work within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective care plans and treatments are in place for highly complex clients/services users.
* Work collaboratively and ensure maintenance of effective multi-disciplinary communication and with other professionals, agencies and stakeholders to ensure needs are met in relation to care input, support for ongoing care needs and safe discharge.
* Communicate highly complex information about clients/services users conditions to multi-disciplinary team colleagues, to ensure effective delivery of patient treatments.
* To ensure that systems are established and maintained to ensure effective communication with clients/services users, and carers / relatives.
* Use advanced skills and expert knowledge to clinically lead and enable others to deliver best practice across the service.
* Lead and support others to recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations including the assessment and management of risk.
* Ensure understanding of own and others level of accountability and responsibility when delegating tasks and duties to students, non-registered staff or registered staff.
* Lead, participate in and cooperate with concerns, complaints and investigations as required.
* To provide an Independent Prescriber service in accordance with the clinical setting agreed with the Medics. This will include initiating, titrating, and optimising pharmacological treatment for adult ADHD.
* To perform physical health monitoring specific to individual psychiatric medications and the NICE guidelines.
* To order or undertake blood tests, ECGs and refer to specialists (i.e., cardiology) if required for diagnostic and monitoring purposes. Interpret the results and act accordingly. To undertake training to achieve this competence.
* To record all interactions and interventions with clients/services users into their medical records.
* Ensure effective communication with primary care and related healthcare professionals about review outcomes, treatment plans and referrals, normally through typed letters.
* Liaise with the clients/services users General Practitioner when any matters arise.
* To receive specific supervision from suitably trained staff relating to the non-medical prescribing role.
* To attend and contribute to the Trusts Non-Medical Prescribing Forum (minimum of 3 times per year).
* Work in line with SHSC Non-Medical Prescribing protocol.
* To work in accordance with the local shared care agreement for adult ADHD.
* To develop and deliver non-pharmacological interventions and treatment for those with adult ADHD.
* Take full professional and legal responsibility for all prescribing carried out.
* To provide advice to clients/service users and carers about safe and effective use of medicines.
* To conduct a risk assessment and take appropriate action when reviewing clients/service users at clinics.
* To be responsible for the safety and security of the FP10 prescription pads in accordance with the Trust (and CCG where appropriate policies and procedures).
Leadership and communication
* Lead, co-ordinate, organise and prioritise your own work and the work of the team on a day-to-day basis.
* Ensure supervision of others and participate in education and development.
* Lead and monitor the development of services, new ways of working and the implementation of change.
* Acts as a professional and clinical role model to all staff, clients/services users, carers and the public at all times.
* Develop effective and efficient relationships with members of the multi-disciplinary team on issues related to patient care.
* Act in a professional manner and ensure self and other staff are held accountable.
* Deputising for Clinical Leads as necessary and appropriate to role.
Education and Training
* Act as a clinical expert and information resource, leading in training, education and orientation programmes for staff, students and others.
* Assess and ensure the specialist education and training needs required for self, others and the service are identified, that will allow health care to be delivered to the user through new ways of working.
* Teach and educate clients/services users, their carers and other healthcare professionals about managing their condition.
* Proactively develop, implement and monitor public health and health promotion activities in accordance with national and local priorities.
* Contribute and partake in clinical research.
* Attend regular NMP updates as part of CPD to continue to practice within the organisation.
Person Specification
Training and qualifications
* Registered Mental Health Nurse with live NMC Registration and recorded prescribing qualification. Registered General Nurse considered with relevant experience.
* Independent Non-Medical Prescriber with clear demonstrable knowledge and skills and extensive previous experience relating to prescribing.
* Training in assessment and treatment of ADHD.
Knowledge and Skills
* Specialist knowledge of clinical aspects of ADHD.
Experience
* Substantial post-qualification experience and expertise in a variety of mental health conditions. Demonstrating experience in managing ADHD, including the assessment of highly complex and co-morbid cases, with an understanding of issues affecting clients, their families, and caregivers within this client group.
