Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new clinical service manager post within the psychosexual service. This post allows the post holder to hone and develop their management skills while supporting the research and clinical work within the team.
Main duties of the job
The role would suit a motivated and committed Psychologist/Psychotherapist/Family Therapist or Art Therapist with skills and experience working with individuals and couples presenting with complex sexual problems. The successful candidate would have a proven record of delivering psychological therapy and be competent in at least one therapeutic modality (e.g., CBT) and possess knowledge of psychosexual therapy, sexual dysfunction, and issues around gender identity. The role involves developing, coordinating, and ensuring the systematic provision of highly specialist psychological interventions for clients of the Psychosexual Service and providing clinical leadership to more junior psychological practitioners and other professionals, as appropriate, while managing the team's resources.
Working for our organisation
The Psychosexual Service is an outpatient clinical service, part of the National Service Division, for adults aged 18 and over with no upper age limit. It specialises in treating people with complex and persistent sexual problems. The service offers assessment and treatment for individuals and couples who are experiencing difficulties with their sexual functioning, where the primary cause is psychological, or where the psychosexual problem has developed as a result of physical pathology. We have expertise in treating people with a range of sexual dysfunctions and gender-related difficulties.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
KR 1: Clinical and Client Care
• Develop, coordinate and ensure the systematic provision of highly specialist psychological interventions for clients of the Psychosexual Clinic.
• Provide highly specialist psychological assessments, formulations, and interventions for clients of the clinic according to discipline including evidence-based treatments for psychosexual dysfunction and sexual trauma.
• Assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans.
• Provide culturally appropriate psychological or psychotherapeutic interventions with carers or families of referred clients when required.
• Provide reports, including relevant formulation, opinion and interventions, to inform referrers and, where appropriate, service users and their families.
• Select and deliver evidence-based specialist therapeutic interventions, drawing from a spectrum of ideas and models, monitoring outcomes and modifying interventions as necessary.
• Promote psychological support for carers (or families as appropriate) of referred clients.
KR 2: Responsibilities for team or service clinical functioning
• Coordinate (and chair) meetings for the Psychosexual Clinic to ensure effective functioning of the team.
• Ensure a psychologically and psychotherapeutically informed framework for the Psychosexual Clinic.
• Lead in developing the team or service's delivery of accessible and acceptable services to diverse local communities.
• Advise other members of the service on specialist psychological care of clients.
• Liaise with referrers, GPs, and other professionals concerned with clients to develop and review care plans.
KR 3: Policy and service development
• Implement policies and procedures in own area of work.
• Identify aspects of the psychosexual service which could be improved and propose changes to practices or procedures.
• Initiate and implement service development projects as agreed with clinical/professional lead.
KR 4: Care or management of resources
• Take care of and use the Trust's equipment and physical resources carefully.
• Monitor and advise clients on the safe use of materials and processes.
KR 5: Management and supervision
• Provide clinical leadership to more junior psychological practitioners and other professionals as appropriate.
• Supervise trainees within own area of specialism having completed the relevant training.
KR 6: Teaching and Training
• Undertake occasional teaching and training of pre and post-qualification psychological practitioners and specialised training to other professions as appropriate.
KR 7: Record-keeping and Information Governance
• Ensure that all information generated by own work is recorded as required by Trust policies and local procedures.
KR 8: Research and development
• Initiate, undertake, support and supervise regular complex service evaluation and audits.
KR 9: Maintaining professional standards and continuing professional development
• Maintain own Continuing Professional Development in line with registration body and Trust Personal Development Plan requirements.
KR 10: General
• Travel to meetings as appropriate and across the Trust when required.
• Respond appropriately and professionally to emotionally distressing situations.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Entry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession or equivalent.
* Completed training course in clinical supervision and/or accredited to supervise qualified psychological practitioners in relevant discipline.
* Registered with professional body as appropriate to discipline HCPC/UKCP/BABCP.
Experience
Essential criteria
* Evidence of having worked as a clinical specialist under supervision in the area of psychosexual dysfunction.
* Experience of proposing and implementing service development projects within own service.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Advanced knowledge of the theory of psychological therapy and its therapeutic application in the area of psychosexual dysfunction.
* Knowledge of racial and other diversity issues and factors affecting access to mental health care.
