This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) as we promote British trade and investment across the world.
The Trade Agreements Analysis team (TAA) provide high-quality evidence to drive the design, negotiation and evaluation of trade policy instruments which enhance trade and investment with the UK’s key partners, with a strong focus on free trade agreements.
TAA is a multi-disciplinary analysis team. This role is as a country lead where you will provide analysis directly to the Chief Negotiators of ongoing trade agreements to set out the evidence base underpinning strategic and policy issues. You will also have the opportunity to publish comprehensive analysis on the economic impacts of trade deals before the launch of trade negotiations and at the end of negotiations.
The post offers the opportunity to work at the heart of delivering on a Government priority and to use your analytic skills to directly shape trade and investment policy and negotiations. It’s a job that requires exceptional communication skills with non-analysts and a strong confidence when working to senior members of the department.
You will be leading, planning and delivering the programme of economic analysis to underpin the UK negotiation of trade agreements with key partners. This will involve:
* Providing analytical input into the development of the UK’s negotiating mandate and support the negotiation.
* Providing input to briefs for policy and the Chief Negotiator to respond to Parliamentary Questions, Freedom Of Information requests and submissions to Ministers, as well as more in-depth analysis of individual countries and sectors.
* Leading on producing comprehensive Scoping Assessments and Impact Assessments for new trade negotiations to be published.
* Leading and coordinating analysis with other Government departments to deliver analysis to support the UK’s trade policy objectives.
* Line management of assistant analysts, and the leadership and coordination of work from other analysts in the department to support the policy development. This includes working closely and flexibly with the rest of TAA to support changing resource demands.
* Use of statistics and economic data from a wide range of both published and unpublished UK and international sources to identify the most suitable information, key messages and trends (and propose conclusions) to support bi-lateral and multilateral discussions with partner countries.
* There will also be opportunities to develop and learn how to use R/R Studio and apply it to the data to meet specific trade agreements user needs.
