What does a VFX environment concept/matte painter artist do at Hogarth?
A VFX Environment concept artist specialises in creating realistic and immersive digital environment concepts that could be seen as a real-world location i.e.: very authentic which in turn serves as the settings for full cgi film, and other multimedia projects. These environments range from vast, sweeping landscapes to intricate cityscapes, blending artistic creativity with technical expertise. By drawing inspiration from real-world locations, the concept artist develops ideas that guide the overall aesthetic, helping to inform both clients and the VFX environment art department about the look and feel of specific environments. The potential matte painting elements would be developed with the VFX Environment supervisor as what to create within the environments to bring them to life.
Responsibilities
Design and conceptualise full 3D environment builds that align with the project's artistic direction story and brief.
Use industry standard 2D and 3D software (Houdini, 3DS Max, Maya, Z-brush, Photoshop, Substance, etc,) to create 3D world concepts as well as some matte painted elements for distant objects.
Collaborate with our in-house pipeline team to organise 2D/3D and USD files for our Environment supervisors to use and access.
Work closely with our creatives, concept and environment artists, as well as our Environment supervisor.
Understand and follow all production workflows and procedures, ensuring assets meet specifications through quality checks.
Requirements
Proficiency in a variety of 2D and 3D tools, including: Houdini, Max, Maya, Z-brush, Substance, and Photoshop for high-quality asset creation for both still images and motion shots.
Deep understanding of 3D world creation for CG filming, and the creation process and expert knowledge in CG shading, texturing and rendering and look development.
Capable of delivering photorealistic environment concepts that can be used seamlessly in film and media productions.
