BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. You'll be joining our Engineering and Technology team in Cambridge, with a period of training lasting approximately 6 months before deploying to Rothera Research Station, living and working in Antarctica for the duration of the contract. You'll help us to deliver high quality scientific datasets for academic research, by operating and maintaining scientific instrumentation. You will also be responsible for Rothera's various communication platforms to communicate with the outside world. This role includes working as part of a team on a rota performing meteorological observations and includes aircraft control tower support work. There will be periods of time where the engineer would be expected to fly and camp at remote field sites to install and maintain scientific experiments in the interior of Antarctica. The work is incredibly varied and interesting. You would be expected to work with different teams of people to support a common objective that requires both good interpersonal skills and self-reliance. Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop as a field engineer. There is a particular focus on autonomous systems, renewable power systems, radio communications, HF/VHF radar, passive receivers and optical sensing technologies Current projects the team are working on include fit out of a new aircraft control tower, deployment of stereoscopy cameras to observe the movement of an ice front, needing renewable energy and communications links. The science programme at Rothera is continuous with a multitude of sensors needing checking and maintaining daily.
