Job overview
The Trust is seeking a consultant psychiatrist to join the Psychological Medicine Team. This is an existing vacancy currently covered by a locum.
The psychological medicine in Primary Care team comprises 1.5 WTE consultant psychiatrists (this post contributes 0.7), 1.8 WTE psychologists, 1 WTE band 7 team lead/liaison practitioner, and 7 WTE band 6 liaison practitioners.
This role provides psychiatric support to 4 of 8 neighbourhoods, sharing one with another psychiatrist due to demand. The team accepts 4-6 referrals weekly, with responsibilities for assessments shared between psychiatrists and psychologists based on referral needs. The post holder will conduct 1-2 assessments weekly, completing approximately 40-50 assessments/formulations annually, with about one-third signposted to other services and two-thirds entering case management. The case management lasts 12-18 months and is primarily managed by liaison practitioners, with the post holder overseeing around 100 patients at any time.
Main duties of the job
The aim of ‘Psychological Medicine in Primary Care’ is to support Primary Care, Neighbourhood Teams, and IAPT services (Healthy Minds) to improve care for those with medically unexplained symptoms, long-term conditions, and complex psychological/psychiatric issues, bridging physical and mental health care and primary and secondary care.
This involves two main activities:
* Working with GP practices across Stockport providing education, supervision, and consultation for persistent physical symptoms and personality-related difficulties, linked with local IAPT services.
* Evaluating and developing skills of health and social staff across Stockport, including IAPT and primary care staff.
The role includes implementing, delivering, and evaluating the service in collaboration with clinicians and managers, supported by the Psychological Medicine Service.
Working for our organisation
The post involves working alongside an existing psychiatrist and psychotherapist to provide consultation and liaison with GP practices and neighbourhood practitioners using a collaborative care model. The focus is on patients with complex psychological and psychiatric issues, including those with high risk, on complex medication regimens, or needing diagnosis/formulation. Outcomes are key performance indicators.
The post holder will liaise with Primary and Secondary Care Mental Health Services and other clinicians, including GPs, nurses, and community healthcare staff.
