Due to a growing cohort of patients, we are looking to appoint a Specialist Screening Nurse for the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme to work in our small and friendly specialist nurse team.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with an interest in population screening who would like to expand their nursing role by undertaking training to perform ultrasound scanning.
The successful candidate will be required to complete the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners which will be undertaken on the job and with dedicated study time and support.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join a team of Specialist Screening Nurses responsible for providing care for patients participating in the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme.
The primary purpose of this role is to undertake abdominal ultrasound scanning in nurse-led clinics as part of the community AAA screening programme and undertake nurse assessments for those patients who screen positive for AAA.
The post holder will ensure abdominal ultrasound scanning is undertaken to a high standard and in accordance with national standard operating procedures as identified by the National Screening Programme (NAAASP).
The role will involve coordinating care, working autonomously, and addressing the needs of individuals that arise. It will also entail detailed and accurate data entry into local and national databases.
The post holder will require excellent communication skills and a flexible approach to their work.
Working days are mainly Monday to Friday 9-5 but with occasional Saturday or evening work. A degree of flexibility regarding days worked is essential.
This is a permanent position.
Our base is at Glenfield Hospital but clinics are held daily around Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland so the post involves daily travel.
Job responsibilities
The AAA Screening specialist nurse will run nurse-led screening clinics in GP surgeries and other community-based venues throughout Leicestershire and Rutland carrying out ultrasound scans, and providing health assessment and lifestyle advice/counselling to men who screen positive for abdominal aortic aneurysm, below the referral threshold. Duties will include:
1. Organise follow up for patients with positive scans including referral into Vascular surgery where appropriate.
2. Assess and counsel men at specific points in the screening process, to give advice on changes in lifestyle and where appropriate make referrals to local health and welfare services.
3. Provide support, advice, and referrals (if appropriate) to ensure individuals who screen positive for AAA understand the issues and consequences associated with AAA management and surveillance.
4. Provide advice, education, support, and information to patients as required and involve patients in planning and delivery of care.
5. Establish and maintain effective communication with patients.
6. Facilitate effective communication and liaison with other disciplines as necessary to meet the needs of the patient especially in relation to ongoing care.
7. Participate in the delivery of health optimisation initiatives within the local programme.
