About The Role
As a Materials Technologist you will be working within our Global Technical Science & Technology team who provide extraordinary technical leadership for Diageo's global portfolio across Whisky, Spirits, Beer, Ready-to-Drink and Non-Alcoholic beverages.
This role plays a key part in supporting the improvement of Diageo's manufacturing processes and enabling new opportunities through insight and technical knowledge. You will carry out analytical measurements and investigative work within the Packaging Technology Laboratory, contributing to a variety of projects related to packaging testing and qualification. These projects may include Brand Change & Innovation, Quality, Supplier Development, Procurement, Sustainable Packaging and Luxury Packaging.
You will report directly to the Laboratory Senior Specialist - Packaging (Packaging Laboratory Manager) and support them in the continuous development and enhancement of laboratory capabilities and ways of working.
The role is based at the Diageo Technical Centre in Menstrie, within the Packaging Technology Laboratory. You will collaborate with teams and manufacturing sites across the globe and may be required to occasionally travel internationally.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Compliance - Operate within, support and actively contribute to the laboratory's compliance agenda, including health & safety, financial protocols and environmental standards.
2. Packaging Testing Expertise - Demonstrate an understanding of packaging materials used across the beverage alcohol industry and testing these materials. Understand the development of emerging or novel materials, risk management and test method development. Show curiosity and drive improvements in these areas.
3. Component Testing - Apply packaging test methods, operate and maintain test equipment, and support method development. Conduct lab testing, understand Diageo's Design for Quality, assess component/machine interactions, and perform risk assessments with appropriate mitigations.
4. Project Management - Manage workstreams or smaller projects using fundamental project management principles to deliver on time and to scope.
5. Business Communication - Translate technical information into clear, engaging communication. Stay commercially aware and take ownership of business impact, benefits, risks and opportunities.
6. Technical Business Support - Use technical knowledge and experience to be responsible for the resolution of complex and time-sensitive technical issues, providing practical and effective solutions to support the business.
About You
We're looking for a technically skilled and motivated individual who is passionate about packaging, materials science and delivering high-quality results.
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
1. A degree in a relevant science or engineering field with experience in a materials production environment or a relevant laboratory setting.
2. Understanding of materials and components used in food and beverage packaging with hands-on experience in testing packaging materials.
3. Food safety knowledge - Good working knowledge of hygiene standards, including HACCP principles.
4. Auditing Experience - Lead ISO9001 audit qualification and experience would be a strong advantage.
5. Communication Skills - Strong analytical, planning, and organisational abilities. Cultural awareness and the ability to adapt your communication style.
6. Customer Focus - A strong understanding of customer and business needs.
7. Professional Network - An active and well-established network in materials science that supports positioning the team as a global centre of excellence.
