Assistant Driller Location: London Salary: Competitive Contract Type: Permanent Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday What you’ll do: The Assistant Driller supports the Lead Driller in performing geotechnical drilling operations safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. This role involves preparing drilling equipment, assisting with on-site operations, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations. The Assistant Driller is also responsible for maintaining equipment, collecting soil and rock samples, and ensuring smooth project execution. Key Responsibilities: Operational Support Assist the Lead Driller in operating drilling rigs and associated equipment during geotechnical investigations. Perform tasks such as site preparation, rig setup, and borehole drilling under supervision. Handle and maintain drilling tools, rods, and consumables. Assist in collecting and handling soil and rock samples, ensuring their integrity for testing. Support the installation of monitoring equipment, such as piezometers or standpipes. Equipment Maintenance Conduct daily pre-start checks on rigs and equipment to ensure safe operation. Perform routine maintenance tasks, including cleaning and minor repairs. Report equipment defects or malfunctions to the Lead Driller promptly. Ensure tools and consumables are stored safely and securely on-site. Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance Adhere to all company health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures. Participate in daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, and risk assessments. Ensure the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Identify and report potential hazards or unsafe conditions on-site. Support environmental best practices, including proper waste management and minimising site impact. Collaboration and Teamwork Work closely with the Lead Driller and other team members to ensure smooth project delivery. Assist in coordinating on-site activities, such as material handling and logistics. Follow instructions and provide support to team members as needed. Record Keeping and Reporting Assist in maintaining accurate site records, including drilling logs and sample data. Support the Lead Driller in preparing site documentation and reports. Ensure all data is recorded accurately and submitted promptly to project managers. What we’re looking for: Essential Skills & Experience Some experience in drilling operations, construction, or related fieldwork. Basic knowledge of drilling techniques, soil mechanics, or geotechnical investigations. Ability to operate hand tools, machinery, and lifting equipment safely. Strong awareness of HSE regulations and safe working practices. Physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Desirable Skills & Experience NVQ Level 2 in Land Drilling or willingness to obtain. Experience in geotechnical drilling or site investigation projects. First Aid or relevant safety certification.
