Job summary
As Clinical Director of Christie Medical Physics and Engineering (CMPE) you will lead a multidisciplinary team of over 200 employees providing medical physics and engineering services to The Christie, satellite centres, regional and national customers. The post holder will carry responsibility for therapy and diagnostic services delivered on multiple sites.
Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for scientific standard of Medical Physics services including:
1. Radiotherapy services at The Christie and its satellites
2. Nuclear medicine services at The Christie, regional Nuclear Medicine and the National PET contract.
3. Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection services to contracted trusts and The Christie NHS Trust
4. Clinical Engineering services at The Christie
This is an opportunity to lead clinical scientific services at the highest level. You will ensure services provided at The Christie NHS Trust and regional customers are of the highest standard, and represent The Christie nationally and internationally.
The Christie has strong links to academic institutions and, in particular, you will work with the University of Manchester to teach and research for the benefit of patients.
This post involves scientific leadership for perhaps the largest Medical Physics department in The NHS.

Job responsibilities
1. Accountability
* Accountable for the direct delivery of Christie Medical Physics and Engineering services including Radiotherapy Physics, Nuclear Medicine, Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection and Clinical Engineering.
* Accountable for the Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering budget of ~ £25.2m for services delivered to The Christie and regional customers.
* Responsible officer for regional contracts of up to £700,000 per annum.
* Take responsibility for scientific standard of Medical Physics services.
2. Leadership
* To provide operational and scientific leadership to the CMPE Directorate.
* To provide health care science leadership within The Christie NHS Trust acting as lead scientist for the medical physics branch of healthcare science.
* To represent The Christie as part of the Operating Network of radiotherapy centres.
* Provide Healthcare science leadership with the Northwest Network of Healthcare Science.
* Participate nationally through leadership roles in relevant bodies such as The Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine or Royal College of Radiologists and The British Institute of Radiology.
* Provide leadership in research representing the directorate on the Research Strategy Committee and working closely with the University of Manchester on the radiation-related research portfolio.
* Professional leadership for healthcare scientists working in Medical physics.
3. Management
* To set and gain acceptance of challenging but realistic objectives, plans and budgets by key staff; helping them to meet their objectives through guidance, support and co-ordination.
* To manage the Medical Physics Directorate Budget and clinical service budgets of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine.
* To ensure the efficient and cost-effective provision of Medical Physics services of the highest possible quality.
* Determine strategic objectives for the long-term planning of Medical Physics and other services which depend on Physics and Clinical Engineering.
* To ensure satisfactory outcomes for the Directorate and the users through the negotiation of Service Level Agreements with NHS Trusts and other service users.
* Contribute to overall management of Trust, serving on policy making and management committees.
4. Professional role
* To provide Medical Physics Expert level scientific advice within the fields of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering.
* To maintain awareness of professional issues within the UK and International Medical Physics community.
* Develop and maintain contacts with policy makers at all levels within the NHS and DoH.
* Maintain competency in one area of medical physics at Medical Physics Expert level.
5. Scientific - Clinical Service delivery
* To ensure that the requirements for physics and engineering are identified and optimised within the resources available.
* To work with operational group leaders in taking responsibility for the standards of service delivery.
* To ensure that the Directorate is proactive in the identification and implementation of new applications of physics and engineering within medicine.
* Lead policy implementation, service developments and the production of business cases at Network level and above.
* Oversee the identification and analysis of operational and financial risks to the directorate.
6. Scientific - Research and Development
* To provide leadership for the Directorates research portfolio.
* Publish research in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals and communicate research through national and international conferences.
* To work with clinical departments and academic groups operating within the Trust to maintain a coherent R&D strategy.
* To ensure that the outcomes of research and development are promulgated through internal reports and presentations.
* To establish and maintain collaborations with scientific and clinical departments in healthcare organisations.
7. Education
* Oversee a programme of education including collaboration on Masters and doctoral programmes with multiple higher education institutions.
* Provide leadership for the Directorates teaching activities.
* Provide an environment for training and Continuous Professional Development of Staff.
8. Human resources, Teaching and training
* To have responsibility for the operational sections and support section within CMPE in respect of HR issues.
* To ensure that members of staff are educated, motivated and trained to meet existing needs.
* To work closely with the Manchester University and other Universities in the region to develop educational courses.
