RPS is looking for a Senior Analyst to join our Laboratory in Bedford. This is a full-time, permanent analytical role based in the Inorganics section.
This role offers the opportunity to work hands-on with advanced instruments, where you’ll play a key part in delivering high-quality analytical results. You’ll be responsible for managing sample analysis, scheduling instrument time efficiently, and collaborating with extractors and senior analysts to ensure smooth operations.
In addition to operating and maintaining equipment, you’ll review results, identify anomalies, and provide valuable support to maintain our lab’s rigorous standards.
About The Team:
RPS Laboratories is a team of Analysts, Chemists, and Technicians that operate from purpose-built laboratory facilities which have a long history of providing expert advice and analytical solutions to the agrochemical sector. Our laboratories enjoy an international reputation for solving complex and novel analytical problems in a wide variety of food, feed, and forage crops.
We have state-of-the-art laboratories in Bedford and Manchester:
· Our Manchester laboratory was one of the first laboratories in the UK to gain MCERTS accreditation for the analysis of stack emissions.
· Our Bedford laboratory was one of the first laboratories in the UK to gain UKAS accreditation for the analysis of PFAS chemicals following the monitoring required at the Buncefield oil terminal.
About You:
As a key member of the Laboratories business, your role as a Sample Reception Team Leader is critical to helping us conduct investigations and formulate effective solutions to help our clients comply with international quality standards, maximum residue limits (MRLs), environmental regulations, and much more.
By joining us, you will collaborate with our clients to design a tailored analytical programme to meet their complex regulatory needs, leveraging our state-of-the-art instrumentation. You will be influential in providing analytical support during the remediation and clean-up project and subsequent routine monitoring.
Your Responsibilities:
* Follow established procedures to perform trace inorganic analysis on a wide range of samples/matrices.
* Work with extraction staff to ensure samples are prepared for analysis according to customer requirements.
* Operate ICP-MS, IC, wet chemistry techniques, continuous flow analyser, discrete analyser, IC, elemental analyser, UV and IR spectroscopy techniques, TGA, PSD and other instrumentation as required.
* Train analysts and extractors within the Inorganic Section.
* Prepare samples, solutions and reagents following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
* Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical equipment.
* Take lead in assigned projects, including method development and validation.
* Process and interpret analytical results for entry onto LIMS.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
* A BSc in Chemistry or a closely related subject, or equivalent industrial experience.
* Demonstrable experience working within an accredited analytical testing laboratory, ideally within the environmental, food or medical sectors.
* Demonstrable experience of ICP-MS, IC, wet chemistry techniques, continuous flow analyser, discrete analyser, IC, elemental analyser, UV and IR spectroscopy techniques, TGA, and PSD.
* Demonstrable experience of sample preparation techniques e.g. leachate extractions, whole and partial digestions.
* Demonstrated flexibility in analytical approach and ability to cope with high throughput and varied analysis in a fast-paced environment.
* Good time management skills, attention to detail and ability to cope under pressure.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Knowledge of environmental contaminants and methods for testing is desirable.
* Experience using Agilent software and Microsoft Office is desirable.
