Overview of the role
The Principal Planning Policy Officer is responsible for leading the development and implementation of planning policies related to minerals and waste. This role involves managing the preparation, monitoring, and reviewing local plans and strategies to ensure they align with national and regional policies.
Responsibilities and Duties
1. Strategic Planning and Policy Development:
Lead the preparation, monitoring, and review of mineral and waste plans, ensuring alignment with local plans and strategies. Provide expert advice on planning policies, manage statutory reporting requirements, and contribute to local and national planning forums.
2. Stakeholder Engagement and Representation:
Oversee public consultations, liaise with developers, government agencies, and local communities, and represent the council at public inquiries, appeals, and advisory forums. Collaborate with other services and organizations to ensure consistency in policy implementation.
3. Operational Management and Oversight:
Commission and monitor external consultants, enforce planning regulations, manage complaints related to mineral and waste operations, and supervise complex planning consultations while ensuring compliance with delegation schemes.
4. Leadership and Mentorship:
Supervise junior staff, provide guidance and support, and manage a caseload of complex planning issues, ensuring high-quality outputs and decision-making in line with council objectives.
