Older Adult Consultant Psychiatrist (NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant) - Old Age Consultant Psychiatrist with an interest in Dementia - Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Derbyshire Health Care Foundation Trust has a bespoke Older Adult service and a robust pathway which includes inpatients, Crisis, psychiatric liaison and Community Mental Health Team.
We are advertising for a Consultant Psychiatrist for our new Bluebell Ward which will provide focused mental healthcare for older adults. The 12-bed unit in Walton Hospital, Chesterfield, is being refurbished as part of our Making Room for Dignity Programme, to ensure every service user has a single en-suite bedroom. It is specifically designed for over 65s.
This post as Consultant and therefore Clinical Lead will be working into both the standalone, 12-bed functional mental health ward based in Chesterfield, and the In-Reach and Home Treatment Crisis Team based in Chesterfield and also covering north-east Derbyshire.
If you are interested in moving to the beautiful county of Derbyshire, we can provide a generous relocation package of up to £8,000.
As the Consultant Psychiatrist (Older Adults), you will lead and develop a new service, working with existing staff on the ward as well as new colleagues. A unique benefit of this role is that it will provide cover to the Crisis and Home Treatment Teams, enhancing the links between the in-patient ward and In-Reach Team.
You will be responsible for a cohort of older adult patients with functional mental health needs who have been admitted or are at risk of admission. This is an opportunity to control in-patient admissions and support flow and discharge.
At Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, we put a high emphasis on quality of care, peer support and on clinical engagement in service development and management. We welcome applications from candidates who will bring an enthusiasm for innovation, teaching and development and can work closely with colleagues from different professional backgrounds.
If you have excellent knowledge of your speciality, excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge and have a MB BS or equivalent medical qualification, we would love to hear from you.
This post is situated on the edge of the beautiful peak district and based in the small market town of Chesterfield.

While primarily responsible for delivering a quality clinical service, as Consultant Psychiatrist you will also be expected to be actively involved in the strategic development of the team and broader services, and to work with the team manager and service managers in helping to steer the development of the service in line with the strategic direction of the organisation.
You will provide holistic care with an emphasis on medical assessment and diagnosis, pharmacological treatment and medicines management, support and consultation in the management of complex patients in collaboration with the Inpatient and Crisis Teams as part of the multi-disciplinary care of patients. You will be focused on the most complex cases and will also be available to provide consultation and advice to other team members.
The older adult service line is well established within the Trust and there is a clear pathway for patients. The In-Reach Home Treatment Team acts as the gate-keepers for Functional mental health beds and most admissions are facilitated through this team. Bed occupancy and length of stay have all been positively affected by the development of this team. The team also works proactively to support early discharge.
