Teaching careers in HMC independent schools
We are seeking an outstanding and passionate Teacher of Design Technology to join our thriving, high-performing department. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a forward-thinking school, inspiring students through cutting-edge design, problem-solving, and innovation.
Brentwood Senior School is an academically selective HMC co-educational independent school with small class sizes and a happy, ambitious, and supportive staff team. It is part of Brentwood School, a 3-18 HMC school of 1900 pupils, just 20 minutes from London Liverpool Street.
Our team consists of three specialist Design Technology teachers and two technicians. We focus on Product Design, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, user-centred design, and real-world problem-solving. Students study Design Technology as a discrete subject at Key Stage 3; we offer AQA GCSE Design Technology at Key Stage 4, and AQA A Level Design Technology Product Design in Sixth Form.
Our state-of-the-art facilities include multiple laser cutters, 3D printers, and vinyl cutters; a full suite of traditional manufacturing equipment, including metal casting, brazing and welding bays, milling machines, center lathes, and woodworking tools; plastic forming and fabrication machinery; each workshop is stocked with hand tools, essential machinery like pillar drills and belt sanders, and a variety of cordless power tools to support diverse fabrication needs. Students in Key Stages 3 and 4 all have school iPads, and Sixth Form students have school MacBooks; we use Google Workspace for Education, and also 2D Design and Solidworks as part of our CAD provision.
The Senior Leadership Team is strongly supportive of our progressive curriculum in Design Technology: an important part of the School’s long-term strategy intended to prepare students with the skills they need to flourish in the modern world. The successful candidate will benefit from extensive professional development opportunities, including our sector-leading practitioner enquiry programme, leadership training, and other CPD sessions focused on emerging technologies and pedagogy.
We prioritise the health, safety, and wellbeing of students and staff. To support this, the school provides extensive training as part of the DATA (Design and Technology Association) health and safety training scheme, ensuring every team member is confident and competent in operating machinery and promoting safe working practices.
The successful candidate will also be expected to assist in the support offered to students outside the classroom, including in the workshops after school and the occasional Saturday practical coursework session. Furthermore, all teaching staff are expected to participate fully in the wider life of the School through co-curricular involvement.
We embody our values of virtue, learning, and manners just as those before us have been doing since 1557. We are proud of our modern inclusive community which is shaped by our Christian Foundation. At Brentwood, we ask ‘how is this child intelligent?’ (rather than ‘how intelligent is this child?’) and believe that finding what it is that makes someone tick is the secret to a successful education and the platform for a fulfilled life. Our pupils are confident without being arrogant; they look out for each other, they do the right thing, even when no one is looking, and they respect difference.
We help our pupils to solve problems. In partnership with parents, we teach them to persevere after setbacks, adopt a growth mindset, and challenge the norm. We encourage them to ask questions in class and take control of their own learning. Of course, they work hard and enjoy great success in and out of the classroom, and once they’ve left us, many go on to use and develop their leadership skills and achieve beyond their expectations, always remembering what Brentwood has taught them.
That’s who we are. We are Brentwood.
We are a highly supportive school that values the contributions made by a motivated and intellectually curious staff. We welcome applications from all sectors of the community as we aspire to attract staff that match the social and cultural diversity of our student intake. Staff across both the Prep and Senior School enjoy a bespoke collaborative approach to professional development. We believe in being a research-engaged school, with those that facilitate our in-house research programme being trained by the Institute of Education. We support many of our staff in obtaining external accreditation across a range of fields and are engaged with a number of national and international organisations. There are a range of ways that we enhance our staff experience; free gym membership, benefits hub, free lunch, free tickets to school concerts and performances, to name but a few. Brentwood School has its own pay scale that is significantly above the London Fringe Teacher Pay Scale and we also have a range of subsidised staff accommodation that may be available for the successful applicant should they need to relocate. Teachers have the choice of being members of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme or the School’s own defined contribution scheme along with 14% higher salary.
Applicants who do not have a TES account should visit our website and download an application form or email: recruitment@brentwood.essex.sch.uk. All Brentwood School vacancies can be found on the School’s website. The School reserves the right to change these dates and to close the vacancy at any time.
Brentwood School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
