Senior Installation Engineer (Level 5) Location: Hereford / Malvern Salary: Negotiable Overview of Role Our client, Thorn SDS, is a niche Managed Service Provider with a Head Office based in Alton, Hampshire, who are committed to enabling technology organisations and professionals to thrive within the Space, Defence and Security sectors. They are currently looking for an experienced Senior Installation Engineer to work onsite, 5 days per week, at a secure site in Hereford / Malvern. As a Senior Installation Engineer, you will be working on a highly secure defence site in Hereford, supporting the installation, maintenance, and integration of mission-critical IT and infrastructure systems. This is a hands-on, technical role requiring expertise in hardware installation, cabling, networking, and secure system configuration. They are looking for an SFIA Level 5 Engineer to fill this role. Due to the security restrictions of this role, applicants need to hold, or be able to obtain, the necessary security clearance level of DV (SC with the ability to obtain DV will be considered). Please refer to the Government website on UK Security Vetting for further information. The role may require travel to various sites within the UK which will require overnight stays. Responsibilities: Install, configure, and commission IT infrastructure, servers, and hardware systems. Carry out structured cabling, fibre optics, and secure communications installations. Ensure proper mounting, racking, and cable management in line with MoD standards. Support the integration of secure defence networks and IT systems. Conduct system validation and functional testing post-installation. Troubleshoot and resolve installation issues efficiently. Ensure compliance with Defence Cyber Protection Partnership (DCPP), JSP 440, and MoD security policies. Implement security measures, including encryption, access control, and air-gapped networks. Adhere to change management and configuration management processes. Work alongside network engineers, system administrators, and cybersecurity teams. Maintain detailed installation records, configurations, and system diagrams. Support security audits and accreditation processes (e.g., DEFSTAN 05-138). Provide on-site troubleshooting and technical support for deployed systems. Assist in planned maintenance and system upgrades. Participate in on-call rotations for mission-critical support. Essential Requirements Strong hands-on experience in hardware installation, cabling (CAT6, fibre optics), and rack-mounted server deployment. Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and switching). Familiarity with Windows Server, Linux, and secure system configurations. Understanding of defence IT security standards and compliance frameworks. Ability to work in a classified, secure environment, following strict security protocols. Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and reporting.
