Principal Duties & Areas of Responsibility
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Act as Operator, Practitioner and, where necessary, Referrer within their own scope of practice, clinically justifying examinations as defined in IR(ME)R 2017 and local protocols.
2. Justify imaging request cards in accordance with IR(ME)R 2017 Section 6 Paragraph 5 and advise referring clinicians of the most appropriate investigation in the absence of a Radiologist.
3. Collaborate with cardiologists and Lead CMRI Radiologists in planning and evaluating imaging protocols for patient examinations, developing new protocols and techniques in line with technical advances in the area of specialty.
4. Match clinical indications presented by the referrer to a departmental protocol, modifying protocols where appropriate to optimise diagnostic information.
5. Work as an autonomous practitioner using specialised skills to ensure optimum quality using the lowest possible radiation doses.
6. Recognise and act upon unexpected critical findings on imaging in the absence of a Radiologist.
7. Provide, receive and conclude highly sensitive and complex information.
8. Participate in clinical research projects relevant to the specialty.
9. Perform roles previously undertaken by Radiologists, such as interpreting images/data and undertaking interventional procedures.
10. Ensure infection control procedures and sterile fields are maintained, particularly during handling of pathological specimens.
11. Administer appropriate drugs, radiopharmaceuticals, and contrast agents within their scope of work as authorised by the Trust.
12. Assess and evaluate special needs of individual patients and tailor positioning and procedures accordingly.
13. Anticipate patient communication difficulties and implement alternative methods to ensure patient safety.
14. Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients, being sensitive to their anxieties.
15. Provide a safe environment for patients and act as a point of advice and guidance for patient inquiries.
16. Liaise with external teams, such as wards and clinics, and be aware of NICE guidelines relevant to their specialty.
Operational Responsibilities
1. Lead the development and implementation of work policies and protocols within the specialist area.
2. Participate in producing complex staffing rosters and workload planning.
3. Set and maintain standards for the radiographic service and ensure junior staff comply with departmental standards.
4. Supervise imaging Quality Assurance tests and liaise with physicists and equipment engineers.
5. Encourage and develop all radiography staff through performance monitoring and training programs.
6. Deliver service on a day-to-day basis, deputising for the Lead CMRI Lead Service Manager when necessary.
7. Participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department.
8. Collect, collate and analyse workload statistics for departmental purposes.
9. Devise and implement audit projects to promote evidence-based practice.
Managerial Responsibilities
1. Undertake staff performance development reviews as delegated by the Lead CMRI Radiologists.
2. Provide guidance and support to all grades of staff.
3. Monitor and maintain effective working relationships with staff from other disciplines.
4. Support the superintendent in the day-to-day organisation and supervision of staff and equipment.
5. Identify and report faults on imaging equipment to the appropriate authority.
6. Critically evaluate new equipment and accessories prior to procurement.
7. Assist in recruitment and selection of new staff as delegated by the Superintendent Radiographer.
8. Handle first-line complaints regarding radiographic problems in the absence of the Superintendent Radiographer.
Education, Training, Research and Development
1. Facilitate education of other health professionals and the public regarding radiological imaging modalities.
2. Take a lead role in training within the specialist field.
3. Collaborate with education providers for clinical training of student and graduate radiographers.
4. Organise lectures or act as external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
5. Provide written assessments of junior staff as required by academic institutions.
6. Maintain best practice in accordance with clinical governance principles.
7. Assist in the development of CMRI Radiographer extended role initiatives.
8. Train junior medical staff in technical and practical aspects of specialised examinations.
9. Evaluate ongoing clinical competence of radiographic staff as required.
10. Formulate and review a comprehensive induction/training programme for new staff.
Other Duties
1. Ensure written and electronic records are maintained accurately and timely.
2. Be responsible for the integrity of data on the image-related computer databases.
3. Participate in audit projects to gather evidence for best practice assessment.
4. Respect patient confidentiality at all times adhering to the Data Protection Act.
