SUMMARY:
The Director of Underwriting is responsible for leading the Underwriting function and for providing information, analyses, and RFP support for the Organization to develop recommendations for pricing terms and structure with a primary focus on fully insured and self-funded Med D and commercial clients. This position provides overall direction and leadership to the underwriting teams. The Director is also responsible for serving as an expert consultant on matters of underwriting, performance guarantees, margin, and other financial considerations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops long-range strategic plans and objectives by identifying strategic issues and provides both strategic direction and day-to-day guidance to a team of underwriters and managers to maintain expert underwriting support and meet the needs of the organization.
2. Works with Sales Executive leadership to develop, drive, and execute ASO pricing and margin strategies.
3. Presents recommendations to Executive Leadership on new pricing methodologies and follows through on the execution of key strategies.
4. Oversees and coordinates workflow for the underwriting function.
5. Works with the proposal unit to ensure responses, including pertinent definitions and caveats, for the financial responses to all RFPs are complete and accurate.
6. Consults with Legal and Amwins Rx leaders to ensure contractual deal terms, caveats, and other pertinent information are accurate and support the deal as underwritten.
7. Collaborates with management on staffing plans, productivity metrics, and initiatives to improve efficiencies within the department.
8. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. In-depth knowledge of mathematical applications used in underwriting function, including the ability to calculate figures such as discounts, proportions, and percentages, as well as the ability to apply basic concepts of business mathematics and algebra in underwriting problems.
2. Exceptional communication skills; ability to distill complex material into easy-to-understand presentations, effectively respond to questions, and engage a variety of audiences.
3. Strong team player with a customer service approach.
4. Ability to effectively communicate with the Senior Leadership Team and Executive Leadership Team.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Accounting, Finance, or related areas of study, or equivalent combination of education and/or relevant work experience; HS diploma or GED is required.
2. 8 years of related experience and/or training.
3. 5 years of experience as a PBM Underwriting Manager with commercial and Med D underwriting experience including self-funded and fully insured products.
4. 5 years of leadership experience.
