Industrial Placement – Mechanical Systems Spires, HQ Full-time FTC 40 hours per week THE POWER OF NOW Fortescue Zero’s mission is to be the world leader in zero emission power systems. We are developing and manufacturing the technologies needed to decarbonise our planet. We are expanding across the geographies of UK, US and Australia and becoming a global company. As part of Fortescue, our vision is to be the number one integrated green technology, energy, and metals company. An opportunity has arisen for a Industrial Placement to join the Mechanical Systems department in a rapidly expanding and exciting work environment. About the role Fortescue Zero exists to accelerate the advantage and impact of our clients. We do it through innovative engineering and technology that solves complex problems and brings a step-change in weight, speed and efficiency. Join us to help fulfil our mission to accelerate an efficient, electric and sustainable future. We operate a 13-month (August 2025 - Sept 2026) student placement programme within our Mechanical Systems team where our systems engineer support projects and products through the full life cycle, following a systems engineering approach. Most of the mechanical systems can be categorised as either thermal and fluids or structural, you will embed in either team or have the possibility to rotate through both. Both teams are responsible for their systems, taking ownership and accountability for components and systems from requirements to series release, involved on anything that has a level of structural demand or thermal management, which can include fire suppression, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. This department forms part of our Mechanical Engineering function where you will be working and collaborating closely with Design, CAE, Manufacturing, procurement, test and validation to name a few. Fortescue Zero provides these systems into various sectors, predominantly automotive and off-highway, but also motorsport, aviation, marine and defence. This is an exciting opportunity where you will work with highly skilled and experienced engineering professionals and graduates who you can learn and develop with - the more questions you ask the more you will gain from your experience. It is important to know that many of our industrial placements have been successful in obtaining graduate roles on completion of their degree. What you will do Undertaking a range of engineering activities, typically in the development of structural and thermal systems and components within HV batteries, and wider electrification products into vehicles across different engineering sectors e.g., off-highway, automotive, rail. Supporting system owners in delivering structural and thermal systems and components, from concept through to industrialisation. Supporting system requirement management, ensuring performance, cost and quality requirements are being met for your system. Cascading requirements and defining architecture of systems, sub systems. Creating parts and system-level specification documents and monitoring system costs and timing. Supporting the validation of parts and systems, ensuring tests demonstrate requirements are met. Support DFMEA activity, to help determine ways to mitigate identified failure modes. Generate and present engineering material. Problem solving and fault rectification. Coordinating multi-functional design and development activity, collaborating closely with Design and Simulation teams. About you To be eligible for an industrial placement within our Mechanical Systems team, you will be working towards a degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Aeronautical Engineering (or similar). You should have a good working knowledge of proprietary PC software (e.g. MS Excel, PowerPoint, Office) and be able to evidence your problem-solving and communication skills. It would be advantageous to demonstrate previous experience in a design office environment or project team, and in a fast-paced environment. Demonstration of an interest in materials and structures and/or thermal management solutions would be advantageous. What is in it for you?
