HS2 is Great Britain’s new high-speed railway. Once operational, HS2’s British-built bullet trains will provide zero-carbon journeys between the UK’s two largest cities, Birmingham and London.

Comprising 140-miles of track, four new state-of-the art stations, two depots, 32 miles of tunnel, and 130 bridges, HS2 will leave a legacy of environmentally responsible travel, economic regeneration and technological innovation for generations to come.
HS2 Rail Systems Package 2 involves the design, supply, build, testing and commissioning of all tunnel and lineside M&E systems between London and Birmingham. Scope of works includes installation of tunnel ventilation, cable management, containment and earthing, fire suppression systems, LV distribution and tunnel lighting, cross passage doors, earthing & bonding, points heating, junction lighting and power installation. Costain will be prime contractor, delivering the works with the support of a design team and specialist supply chain partners.

Responsibilities
1. Providing carbon-related expertise to the project team to aid the development of the low-carbon design in line with HS2’s carbon minimisation policy, influencing best practice and innovation throughout ECI phase.
2. Quantifying whole life cycle carbon emissions to identify carbon hotspots and inform carbon reduction strategies and necessary reporting.
3. Collaborating with various teams within the project to deliver the best innovative solution for achieving PAS 2080 compliance.
4. Liaising with carbon specialists and managers within the design house and other contractors to facilitate the best solutions.
5. Ensuring all carbon reduction, BREEAM and sustainable material requirements are accounted for within the programme and target cost.
6. Understanding the Client Carbon and Sustainability Policies and Processes to ensure compliance on the project.
7. Assisting Contract Management in understanding stakeholders' aims, priorities and risks regarding Carbon.
8. Providing management advice on the implementation of clients and company’s policies including external stakeholders.
9. Assisting the Environmental Manager to ensure design teams consider Environmental Sustainability.
10. Researching Environmental and Sustainability Issues and best practices as directed.
11. Monitoring and reporting of environment and sustainability performance.
12. Preparing and presenting environmental and sustainability training/briefings.
13. Promoting best practices and ensuring feedback into the business.
14. Maintaining knowledge and competency in Environmental Management responsibilities.
15. Obtaining competency cards as per the company standards.
Qualifications
1. Minimum of three years’ relevant experience, demonstrating practical understanding of life cycle assessment (LCA) and its methodology.
2. Experience in assessing the carbon and energy impact of construction projects.
3. Knowledge of Type III environmental declarations in construction context.
4. Ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.
5. Excellent organisational, communication and time management skills.
6. A passion for Sustainability.
7. Experience in delivering presentations.
8. Ability to work on own initiative when required.
