A very exciting and new opportunity has arisen for a Nurse Consultant to join our Health and Justice Service, to clinically lead and provide high quality nursing care across the HMP Full Sutton and HMP Millsike prison Mental Health Teams.
HMP Full Sutton is a part of the Long Term High Secure prison estate, housing adult male sentenced prisoners. HMP Millsike is a brand new prison, built next door to Full Sutton. Millsike is a category C male prison.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced registered Nurse who has extensive skills and knowledge of delivering psychologically-informed and compassionate care to individuals who come into contact with the criminal justice system.
As Nurse Consultant you will be expected to provide clinical leadership and direction in the provision of excellent mental health assessment and treatment. You will also deliver highly specialist care to patients with severe and enduring mental health conditions or learning disabilities which may include significant challenging behaviours within the prison services. You will provide expert advice, clinical supervision and training to colleagues and partner organisations and have an opportunity to contribute to research and development projects within the service.
You will be well supported by the Associate Director of Nursing and Service Managers, receiving supervision and professional development opportunities.
Main duties of the job
To build on the development of our prison based clinical pathways and treatment delivery across Health & Justice Services. The service provides high quality and compassion focused care for all of our service users.
You will work within a highly specialised clinical area which will require strategic thinking, interdisciplinary working, a high degree of professional autonomy and critical judgement.
Candidates should have excellent leadership and communication skills and be highly knowledgeable and experienced in working with individuals who suffer from complex mental health problems/ learning disabilities and with a history of trauma, providing and supervising the delivery of highly specialist psychological therapy to clients within the service.

The Nurse Consultant will be based within our clinical services and be able to work in partnership with both the senior clinical leadership and operational management team and our stakeholder and partners, to ensure that the service operates in a recovery focused way, enabling individuals to achieve their recovery goals.
They will be expected to lead on improving the experience of our patients, their families and/or carers by acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively, and sharing information appropriately within a multi-agency context where collaborative working is essential. This position offers the post holder the opportunity to develop both their clinical and leadership skills and be an integral member of the senior leadership team within the H&J Service.
Applicants must hold a first level RNLD/RNMH qualification and have an independent and supplementary nurse prescribing certificate. As well as a Masters, or working towards with successful completion in agreed timescales. A relevant post-registration qualification with a supporting professional portfolio is essential including training in a Governed Psychological Therapy. You will need to demonstrate extensive professional development, excellent organisational skills, autonomy, communication and interpersonal skills and be able to contribute to the existing multi-disciplinary teams and internal/external processes in a senior clinical role.
The successful candidate will be flexible and able to use initiative. They will be expected to provide senior nursing expertise, clinical leadership and to nurture and develop the delivery of high-quality patient care demonstrating excellent clinical outcomes, coordinate clinical practice, ensuring high standards of evidence-based care; take a lead in clinical audit and developing nursing practice within services. They will also need to be capable of working independently and being adaptable to the changing needs of the organisation.
