We have an exciting opportunity for Registered Adult Nurses, who are employees of CDDFT and who already have a relevant degree, to study Midwifery at Masters level.
Whilst working with our Midwifery team at the hospital, you will undertake MSc Midwifery shortened programme over 24 months via the University Of Bradford. This course equips you with the skills, knowledge and professional insight needed to become a registered midwife whilst working within County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.
Salary support for the duration of the course is provided by Health Education England at a maximum salary of top band 5 (AFC). As this is a studentship, previous higher salary bandings will not be matched and there are no enhanced payments for unsociable hours.
Health Education England will also be funding all university tuition fees for those commencing shortened midwifery training between January 2022 - April 2025 (up to a maximum of £9,250 per annum). Successful applicants will need to be able to travel to University of Bradford for the theoretical elements of the course, approx 12 days per year. Course commences 24th March 2025.
Main duties of the job
This programme provides Registered Adult Nurses, who already have a relevant degree, with the opportunity to study Midwifery at Masters level. This course equips them with the skills, knowledge and professional insight needed to become a registered midwife. Whether it is helping women during pregnancy and birth, or giving support to new mothers, you work alongside our midwifery teams at CDDFT, learning through doing, building your confidence as you go. You will graduate ready to excel as a fully rounded Midwife and eligible for registration with the NMC on the midwifery register.
The aim of this course is to prepare safe, competent and confident midwives who can positively contribute to the health of childbearing women, people, newborn, infants and their families. They will gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the future challenges of a rapidly evolving healthcare system.
This MSc course (shortened programme) will build on your skills and knowledge as a registered adult nurse to continue to work as part of our multi-professional team and develop into an autonomous registered midwife ready to join our maternity team.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will work with the maternity team, mothers and their families carrying out assigned tasks involving direct care including, clinical care, information giving, guidance and reassurance, assistance and support to women and their families under the guidance and supervision of a registered midwife.
This role is for NMC registered nurses to complete a shortened midwifery MSc over two years leading to eligibility to register as a Midwife with the NMC. It will include a combination of work-based and academic learning between the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and an approved Accredited Education Institute (AEI) - The University of Bradford.
They will have assigned placements within the CDDFT Maternity Unit across all clinical areas to obtain the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to meet the learning outcomes for the NMC register as a Midwife.
The post holder will:
1. Be allocated maternity placements in the hospital and in the community setting to gain the knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
2. Be required to achieve the standards as set out by the NMC and AEI and on completion of the programme register as a midwife.
3. Take every opportunity to develop their own practice and expand their own general and specialist midwifery skills.
4. Display effective communication and work as a role model by adhering to the Trust expected behaviours and values.
5. Be required to commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the educational programme within the contract period.
6. Act with integrity and professionalism upholding the reputation of the trust and midwifery profession at all times.
7. Work within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trusts procedures for safe working practices.
8. Demonstrate the Trust's values at all times and is aware of national and local objectives for maternity care.
Person Specification
Special Skills & Knowledge
* Has worked in a variety of settings utilising transferable skills.
* Research awareness.
* Some knowledge of professional midwifery issues.
* Able to prioritise care appropriately.
* Understanding of audit and evidence-based practice.
* Can demonstrate an understanding of interprofessional working.
* Evidence of participation in research / clinical audit to change own practice or that of others.
* Has knowledge of Trusts policies and procedures.
Qualifications
* Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (Adult) first level status. This must be maintained to meet the NMC revalidation requirements for the duration of the course.
* Internationally trained Nurses must have IELTS of 7 or above.
* Adult nursing BSc Degree qualification 2:2 or above.
* A Degree or Diploma in Higher Education or 60 level 5 credits.
* Experience in maternity or paediatric settings.
* Experience of Public Health Agenda.
* Recent programme of study at level 7.

* Ability and willingness to travel to placements across CDDFT and attend approx 12 statutory study days per year at University of Bradford.
Experience
* Current substantive employment as a RGN (Adult) with CDDFT.
* Approachable and flexible attitude to work.
* Regular exposure to unpredictable high levels of clinical activity.
* Willing to work throughout the maternity service.
* Must be able to practice in all areas in accordance with the Midwives rules and code of conduct.
* Able to participate in on-call roster.
Statutory Registration
* Current UK NMC Registration as RGN (Adult).
