The following are the core responsibilities of a health care assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
1. Provide routine clinical care to patients as required in accordance with practice policies and protocols
2. Provide wound care to patients
3. Phlebotomy
4. Spirometry
5. ECG recording
6. Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses
7. Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
8. Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients' health and well-being
9. Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
10. Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
11. Maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation
12. Ensure read codes are used effectively
13. Chaperone patients where necessary
14. Assist GPs with minor surgery when required
15. Assist in ophthalmology clinics
16. Support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies
17. Recognise and refer patients presenting with mental health needs
18. Support patients in the use of their prescribed medicines or over the counter medicines (within own scope of practice)
19. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
