Our client based in Wrexham area is currently recruiting a Customs Compliance Officer to join their team on a permanent basis. In an era marked by globalisation and the relentless flow of goods across borders, the Customs Compliance Officer emerges as a pivotal figure in ensuring that trade operations adhere to complex regulatory framework. At the core of the daily duties is the meticulous oversight of our client’s adherence to international trade laws and regulations, as such the following are key responsibilities.
Performance Objectives
• Interpersonal Communication and Relationship Proficiency: communicating effectively with various stakeholders, from government officials to corporate teams and suppliers enabling them to build their relationships en route.
• Regulatory Expertise: profound understanding of customs regulations, trade agreements, and tariff systems to navigate the intricacies of international trade law.
• Attention to Detail: exception precision in scrutinising documents and processes, ensuring all trade activities meet regulatory standards.
• Analytical Abilities: capacity to interpret complex regulations and analyse trade data to make informed decisions and optimise compliance strategies.
• Customs Application: develop opportunities and apply for customs simplifications on behalf of traders including Inward/Outward Processing, Customs Warehousing, Approved Exporter, Duty Deferment, Returned Goods Relief, VAT postponed accounting.
• Oversee customs entry work, ensuring accurate and timely submissions with follow up action for Import and Export declarations.
• Provide cover for brokers when required.
• Respond to Customs related enquiries, including commodity coding, trade preference, duties, valuation, and customs transit.
• HMRC & VAT working knowledge and compliance is critical with practices being maintained aligned with current legislation/regulation through continuous professional development.
• Record Keeping: for accounts, budgeting, and contract purposes.
• Ensure client feedback is communicated with the team enabling teams to learn from the same.
• Logging all activity online.
Person Specification
• Minimum of 5-year experience in similar positions within the packaging sector with practical experience of providing Customs and Compliance Consultancy to Importers and Exporters.
• Strong track record of successfully obtaining customs’ approvals on behalf of traders.
• Working to tight & demanding deadlines.
• Working knowledge of submitting entries into the C88 and CDS software.
• Business Degree would be looked upon favourably although not essential.
• Thorough understanding of market, key players, product knowledge.
• A resilient self-starter with a strong focus on results.
• Able to work as part of a team and support all aspects of business development to achieve our client’s goals.
• Excellent communication, skills both verbal and formal with the ability to build relationships from shop floor to board room.
• Ambitious and highly motivated.
• Working knowledge of MS-Office and sales support functions.
• A former HMRC employee with a customs consultancy or freight forwarding background.
