Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to recruit a Consultant in Clinical Haematology. The Directorate provides services across 3 hospital sites within the county of Worcestershire. The candidate will benefit from working within a friendly and experienced team of consultants.
As a Trust, we are actively involved in developing the training program for students from the Three Counties Medical School based in Worcester which opens in September 2023. We look forward to establishing links with the new Medical School in addition to well-established relationships with the University of Birmingham and the University of Warwick.
As part of the Consultant Advisory Appointment Committee, shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide a 5-minute presentation on the topic: The current challenges facing a Haematology DGH and the way forward.

Main duties of the job
The service for haematology inpatients is centred in the Haematology Unit (Laurel 3) at WRH. The seven Consultant Haematologists within the county act as attending physician to the Haematology Unit for one-week periods on a rotational basis. They are responsible for the admission and management of all inpatients requiring level 1 and 2 care.
WRH is part of the West Midlands Specialist Training Programme for Haematology and currently has two haematology SpR on rotation for 6-12 months. There are also two Specialty Doctors who, in addition to the Haematology SpR, support inpatient and outpatient care, day case reviews and the Haematology laboratory on a 1 in 3 rotational basis. There are dedicated teaching sessions for the middle grade doctors.
The Haematology Unit is also supported by ST1 GP trainee, FY2 and an FY1 doctor designated to Haematology. In addition, the FY2 training module includes Haematology as part of the Pathology rotation.
Out of hours, on-call duties are county-wide and are shared on a 1 in 7 rota (prospective cover) with consultant colleagues. Consultants will provide cover for normal periods of annual and study leave. The on-call consultant will cover all three sites during out of hours, including the A&E and acute laboratories at WRH and the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch. There is also the requirement to participate in the Lab on-call rota with consultant colleagues.

Job responsibilities
This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.
* A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
* The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients' home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
* The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
* The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.
Person Specification
Experience
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT Haematology
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
* Expertise in sub-specialty
Qualifications
* Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification.
* And/or both MRCP or show evidence of equivalent qualification.
Management and Administrative Experience
* Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
* Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
* Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities
* Ability to manage and lead the specialty firm and multi-disciplinary team
* Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit
* Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate
* Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making
Teaching Experience
* Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines
* Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
* Ability to supervise postgraduate research
