Our client is a highly successful, internationally owned SME engaged in warehousing, distribution, and assembly of products sold to high street retailers in the UK and overseas. Reporting to the CFO based overseas, the successful candidate will be a commercially aware, qualified or experienced accountant (QBE) responsible for all aspects of accounting, financial, and company secretarial matters. Supervising a small team, you will play a key role in financial control, business monitoring, cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and liaising with banks and auditors. You will also participate fully in Board meetings.
The role encompasses both financial and management accounting, requiring practical experience in both areas.
Key Requirements
* Maintain the accuracy of ledger data and interpret this data into meaningful reports for management.
* Proficient in Excel, including formulae, functions, and pivot tables.
* Understanding of Sage, particularly Sage X3, is desirable.
* Be commercially aware and self-motivated.
* This is a hands-on role, but also requires the ability to step back from detail to add value.
* Ability to manage staff, delegate tasks, and develop relationships across departments and at all levels within the business.
Main Responsibilities
* Produce monthly management accounts, including variance analysis and commentary for the Board.
* Prepare monthly cash forecasts and provide weekly updates.
* Prepare year-end accounts and working papers for auditors.
* Analyze stock costs, investigate variances, and maintain accurate stock costing.
* Reconcile actual results with profit expectations based on costings.
* Reconcile all balance sheet accounts monthly.
* Maintain schedules for year-end audits.
* Supervise maintenance of cash books and reconciliations.
* Manage payments to suppliers.
* Supervise sales ledger and credit control; review overdue payments weekly.
* During absences, perform sales ledger and credit control duties.
* Supervise payroll processing, including weekly, monthly, and pension payrolls.
* Reconcile PAYE and NI accounts, and prepare annual returns.
* Reconcile VAT accounts monthly and prepare VAT returns quarterly.
* Negotiate renewals for health, insurance, energy contracts, and life assurance.
Salary & Benefits
* Partially remote (1-2 days/week from home).
* Flexitime.
* 37.5 hours/week, with core hours 9:30am–4pm Monday-Thursday and 9:30am–1pm Friday.
* Holiday entitlement: 23 days, rising to 27 with service, plus bank holidays.
