Responsibilities:
1. Lead, develop and deliver an effective Ecology and Environment strategy that supports all business objectives.
2. Provide leadership, acting as the company ambassador in all internal and external interactions, advocating the brand and its values.
3. Establish and manage the ecology and environment resource within the company.
4. Effective project management of Ecological contracts, including commercial aspects, reporting on performance and other KPIs.
5. Lead, develop and retain a skilled, professional and proactive Ecology and Environment team, championing their continual professional development.
6. Report on the performance of the Ecology department as required. Develop and implement improvement programmes internally and with suppliers to achieve continuous improvement.
7. Responsible for the production of contract performance reports, in line with external and internal requirements.
8. Liaise with joint venture and alliance procurement teams to share best practice and maximise value.
9. Lead on implementation, monitoring and evaluation of measures, providing periodic updates to senior management.
10. Build productive professional relationships with internal and external key stakeholders, including clients, sub-contractors and suppliers.
11. Work closely and effectively with all other disciplines to ensure that the Ecology department provides assured delivery and maximum value against the time, cost, quality and safety requirements of the business unit.
12. Lead on designing, training and supporting colleagues in broad aspects of ecological conservation, including protected species/habitat mitigation measures.
13. Advise on and support the environmental, sustainability and social value objectives of the business.
14. Establish and develop excellent working relationships with current and potential clients, ensuring ongoing needs are met and identifying, then securing, future opportunities.
15. Prepare Ecology elements/responses to PQQs, bids, tenders, etc.
16. Effectively manage the Ecology departmental budgets, providing cost analysis to the business.
17. Lead in maintaining and developing effective environmental management systems, including updating policies and documentation and supporting internal and external audit processes as required.
18. Develop and enhance the effective use of GIS and other innovative technological solutions within the business.
19. Oversee the production of technical reports in a timely manner and to a very high standard.
20. Notify senior management of any changes in environmental legislation, and update company policies, procedures, etc. as and when required.
21. Maintain your own continuous professional development, keeping up to date with changes to legislation, scientific advances and best practice.
22. Observe and follow all applicable safe methods of working, and health, safety and environmental rules/procedures. Report any incidents or Close Calls immediately to the appropriate person.
23. Undertake training as required by your manager or the Company.
24. Adhere to Company Policies and Procedures.
25. Be the company ambassador, upholding and reflecting the ethos and values of the Company.

Person Specification:
Essential:
1. Significant recent experience in a similar role, contractor side.
2. Demonstrable line management experience of leading and developing teams.
3. Extensive experience of Ecological Project Management from conception to completion, including Phase 2 site surveys, protected species surveys, including complex sites with multiple protected species/habitats.
4. Extensive experience in producing a range of ecological survey reports covering different species and habitats, including Phase 2 protected species surveys.
5. Highly experienced in habitat identification using UKHab methods and botanical species identification (working at FISC level 4 as minimum).
6. Comprehensive, detailed knowledge of current legislation, UK policy and ecological best practice.
7. Strong commercial acumen.
8. Full Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
9. Holder of several protected species licences, including dormice, GCN or bat.
10. Previous experience of business development and bid management.
11. Extensive experience in report writing, numerical data manipulation and statistical analysis.
12. Highly competent in MS Office.
13. Effective use of IT systems including GIS applications.
14. Presents a professional image with the qualities to act as the company ambassador.
15. A good understanding and application of health, safety & environment practices.
16. Flexibility in your approach to work.
17. Full driving license.

1. CIEEM CEcol.
2. CIEEM CEnv.
3. Postgraduate degree in relevant subject.
4. PTS.
5. Experience of working in the rail industry.
