Job Summary
An opportunity has arisen for a full-time Consultant General ENT Surgeon with a sub-specialist interest in Otology to join the Somerset ENT Service with the host for this post being Somerset NHS Foundation Trust at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. The on-call commitment is a 1 in 6.5 rota covering Taunton. The post will attract 10 PAs.

The post-holder will be encouraged to develop a special interest in conjunction with the existing Consultants.
The appointee would join the Somerset ENT team in delivering a modern, high-quality ENT service which is responsive to patients, and through an integrated service at primary care level will improve health outcomes.
You must be registered with the GMC on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of gaining entry onto), willing to participate as part of the on-call rota and be involved in Teaching and Clinical Governance provision.

Main Duties of the Job
The job plan will include theatre sessions, outpatient clinics to include routine, urgent and 2 week wait referrals, SPA and clinical administration. The post is expected to develop during the appointment and the appointee will be actively involved in this development process. The job plan will then be reviewed annually in accordance with the Trust policy on Consultant Job Planning. As the integrated Somerset ENT service develops there may also be sessions for the successful applicant at Yeovil depending on expertise/special interests/availability.
All Consultants are allocated 1.5 SPAs of core activity and any other roles eg Audit lead, Cancer Lead, Clinical Lead, Educational Supervisor, Research Activity will be allocated as extra SPA time as appropriate.
The ENT department will operate according to a five-week rolling timetable.
Weekends on call are covered on a 1 in 7 rolling rota and week days/nights are covered on a 1 in 6 rolling rota. There is a single layer of junior ENT cover (F2 or SpR) out of hours below the consultant until 9pm and then the hospital at night team reports directly to the ENT consultant on call between 9pm and 8am. The on-call ENT consultant is non-resident.

Job Responsibilities
* To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnostic, treatment and care to patients requiring ENT services, as outlined in the proposed programme.
* To organise, manage and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the Somerset ENT Service.
* Except in emergencies, or where otherwise agreed with your manager, to be responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the Programmed Activities set out in the Job Plan, as reviewed from time to time.
* Responsibility for the associated duties set out in the Terms and Conditions.
* The purpose of including agreed personal objectives in the Job Plan is to set out in clear and transparent terms what you and your clinical manager have agreed should reasonably be achieved in the year in question. These objectives are not contractually binding in themselves, but you have a duty to make all reasonable efforts to achieve them.
* To provide, with Consultant colleagues (as appropriate), a service in the specialty to the hospitals so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
* Locums are not normally employed to cover the absence of Consultants who are away on leave. The number of Consultants who are away on leave at any one time will be agreed in line with the Trust specialty policy. During the absence of colleagues on leave, Consultants are expected to provide agreed levels of cover.
* Where you wish to seek agreement to have External Duties included in your Job Plan, you must notify your clinical manager in advance. Scheduling of such duties will be by agreement between you and your clinical manager.
* You will be required to travel between sites in order to provide some community hospital activity.
* Where emergency work takes place at regular and predictable times, your clinical manager will seek to schedule it as part of the Programmed Activities in your Job Plan schedule. You will also be required to participate in an on-call rota to respond to less predictable emergencies.
* The Trust will provide secretarial support and an adequately equipped office, including IT facilities.
* To provide a general ENT service, in collaboration with other multidisciplinary medical, nursing, technical staff and other staff.
* Teaching of Junior Staff Medical Students, AHP and other professionals.
* To provide supervision and training to Junior Hospital Doctors.
* To participate in clinical audit, evidence-based practice and Clinical Governance within the Department.
* To participate actively in continuing professional development (CPD).

Education, Qualifications & Training
Essential
* Registered medical practitioner, with full registration with the GMC, or within 6 months of being included on the register at the time of interview.
* FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent.
Desirable
* Otology Fellowship.
