Operations Manager – Construction
(with potential to progress to the Board)

Our client is a small (under £5m t/o) SME multidisciplinary building contractor based in the North West, which in recent years has been transformed into a consistently profitable enterprise.
As part of its 3 year business plan, they wish to appoint an Operations Manager who has aspirations to progress to Board level. This is a new role and part of the succession plan in the business, with broad responsibility for the day to day operations of the business, thus allowing the directors to spend more time on strategic development.
Their customer base is well spread across a number of sectors including local authorities, education, manufacturing, chemicals, care homes, hotels and commercial and they always operate as main contractor. The majority of their business is derived from existing customers, with whom they have exceptionally strong relationships.

Staff turnover is very low and there is an emphasis on supporting staff in their personal and professional development.
This role is fully office based but with regular site visits. We operate normal business hours, Monday to Friday. However, we are in construction, and we need the appointee to have empathy with our clients’ demands, which sometimes include some out-of-hours emergency and just being available to ‘sort stuff out’.
Full training will be provided in our systems and processes.
Reporting to the Directors, key responsibilities include:
· Supporting the Operations Director, through the management of all pre- and post-contract operations and activities, and managing both our own staff and sub-contract personnel
· Demonstrating a ‘let’s get the job done’ mindset and with the motivation to get fully involved in all of the day-to-day elements of the business
· Delivering on financial, quality and completion targets
· Client-side project management and delivery, including stakeholder, schedule, and contract management, in addition to estimating, all of which will require a willingness to travel to customer sites throughout the North West and elsewhere
· Ensuring all contracts are completed safely, profitably and to the total satisfaction of the client
· Deputising for The Operations Director when required

Applicants should have the following experience / attributes:
· A trades background, e.g. joinery, plumbing
· Have an appropriate construction-related professional qualification, for example, HND / Inst of Builders / RICS. Other professional qualifications also considered.
· Have or be willing to work towards a Construction Skills Certification Scheme Black Card
· Have the ability to estimate work from the client's interpretation with or without drawings and specifications
· Commercial management / post-contract quantity surveying experience
· c5 years leading managing teams with great people skills, earns respect through positive behaviours
· Build trust and credibility quickly at all levels, both internally and with customers
· Demonstrate a supportive management style personality, decisive, but leads with empathy and humility
· Demonstrate the behaviours required to progress to Board level
