About Clarity Sensors
At Clarity Sensors, we are transforming medical imaging by developing technology that is advancing early disease detection, expanding access to cancer screening, and enhancing patient safety through ultra-low dose X-ray imaging. Our breakthrough X-ray detector technology, powered by cutting-edge semiconductor materials, delivers sharper, high-contrast X-ray images.
As a spin-out from the University of Cambridge’s Optoelectronic Materials and Device Spectroscopy Group, we combine world-class research with a bold vision to bring the next generation of X-ray detectors to market. We have recently been awarded £2.1 million from the European Innovation Council (EIC) and now are building a world-class team of innovators to develop the next-generation X-ray detectors that will revolutionise medical imaging. You'll be at the forefront of materials science and detector engineering, working with advanced perovskite technology to create solutions that deliver Clarity in Every Scan.
If you’re excited about turning groundbreaking science into real-world impact, join us in shaping the future of healthcare.
About the Role
We are seeking a Research and Development Scientist with expertise in solution-based semiconductor synthesis, semiconductor device fabrication, and materials characterization. Broader experience in solution chemistry, crystallization processes, or related fields is also highly valued. In this role, you will drive forward our research and development efforts on state-of-the-art perovskite semiconductors and their integration into high-performance X-ray detectors, working across disciplines to bridge fundamental research and applied technology development.
Key Responsibilities
* Grow and optimise high-quality semiconductor crystals.
* Develop and refine solution-based chemistry for device fabrication.
* Perform electrode deposition and integrate materials into functional detector devices.
* Conduct advanced material characterisation.
* Fabricate and test semiconductor devices and radiation detectors, optimising performance.
* Document and analyse experimental procedures, ensuring rigorous data collection, reproducibility, and reporting of results.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot fabrication and performance challenges.
What We’re Looking For
* PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
* Proven expertise with solution chemistry and/or solution-based semiconductor synthesis/device fabrication.
* Strong background in materials characterisation.
* Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical challenges independently.
* Excellent documentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
* Strong communication abilities for effective collaboration across disciplines.
We particularly encourage those candidates typically underrepresented in the STEM area to apply.
* Experience with halide perovskite materials (highly desirable).
* Experience in photolithography.
* Knowledge of electrical engineering principles related to detector readout and interfacing.
* Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages for data analysis and hardware interfacing.
* Competitive Salary (£40,000-£45,000), dependent on experience.
* Be part of an exciting early-stage venture, working on cutting-edge technology, shaping strategic decisions, and driving innovation alongside a talented team.
* Opportunities for growth and career advancement, with ample chances for leadership and exploration as the company evolves.
* Competitive holiday allowance, including the Bank Holidays.
