We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Technologist within the Research & Development function of the Vacuum Technique Business Area, part of the Atlas Copco Group. The role, reporting into the Core Technology Manager, is based in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, with occasional opportunities for homeworking.
The Purpose of the Job
To carry out new Technology projects and Technology investigations by acting as a key point of reference and subject matter expert.
To support the wider Technology team with strong analytical skills and understanding of first principles, particularly in the areas of thermo/fluid dynamics and solid mechanics/dynamics.
To select, develop, evaluate, and demonstrate innovative enabling technologies and methods that can be readily applied to Atlas Copco future products and their applications.
Main Responsibilities
* Initiate innovative technology solutions to vacuum pumping problems and make specific recommendations for resource and timescale requirements for the implementation of projects that will advance Atlas Copco products and their applications.
* Provide detailed evidence to support the recommended technologies, which may include but not necessarily be limited to:
o Reports and supporting documentation highlighting the strengths, weaknesses and limits of deployment of the proposed technology
o Proof-of-concept demonstration
o Detailed test reports
o Methods, calculations and design rules established
o Technical specifications and descriptions
o Engineering sketches or drawings
o Circuit schematics and software documentation
* Promote and assist with analytical modelling techniques that support and strengthen the solutions proposed in test and validation.
* Provide, enable and promote rigorous problem-solving techniques and methods that can be deployed to the wider technical community and help initiate and monitor the appropriate tools and methods.
* Monitor and enhance experimental techniques and methods used in product development by application of the most relevant and up-to-date methods and equipment resulting in rigorous and time-efficient results.
* Seek and disseminate information to enhance team knowledge and innovation in the Technology group.
* Where required, develop project plans with estimated timescales and costs for further technology investigations and/or producing technical demonstrators.
* Where required, publish a technology risk assessment backed up by documented analysis and test results. A Technologist’s ultimate goal is to make a clear statement on whether or not the technology/technical solution is understood well enough, and has low enough risk, to be incorporated into a mainline New Product Introduction project or to a Customer’s new application or into Production as a problem fix.
A typical pattern of work for a Senior Technologist may include:
* Continuous awareness of the state-of-the-art and industry trends for the technologies and techniques relevant to their subject matter expertise.
* Identification of external sources of relevant knowledge, excellence and associated services, including industry experts, key suppliers, competitors and academia.
* Problem/requirements capture and analysis.
* Identification and selection of relevant technologies and techniques.
* IP awareness in the field of interest.
* Design of experiments and selection of the most promising technology/technique.
* Development of proof-of-concept technology demonstrators.
* Testing, analysis and documentation/reporting.
Skills / Knowledge / Experience
* Completed studies (Bachelor, Master or PhD) in relevant technical subjects, typically: physics, mechanical engineering, mechatronics.
* 10 years’ experience in a relevant field, either in Industry or Research.
* Strong understanding of applied mathematics, thermo/fluid dynamics, solid mechanics/dynamics and experience applying this knowledge to complex real-world problems.
* Experience in a number of the following areas: vacuum and UHV applications, gas flow regimes, cooling and heating systems, pumps, rotating machine design, lubrication systems.
* Knowledge of mechatronics/electronics/electrical engineering (e.g., controllers and inverters) sufficient to interface with systems teams.
* Excellent analytical and modelling capabilities, such as calculations from first principles, Excel, Matlab, MathCAD, CAE, FEA, CFD and bespoke simulation tools. Programming/coding is an advantage.
* Good experience and usage level of the key MS office packages, e.g., MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams.
* Ability to work as an individual and as part of a team.
* Ability to define, plan and lead multiple projects to agreed metrics ensuring all aspects of design, development and research are fully understood and design rules/parameters are defined and documented.
* Ability to generate innovative designs, methods and new technologies with a proven record of inventorship.
* Ability to build relationships and influence team members to achieve goals. Able to provide leadership and direction, and to foster good communications.
* Awareness of customer, competitor and 3rd party technology landscape.
* Ability to represent the Technology function internally and externally with credible reports, papers and presentations in order to support the business and grow the interaction for Technology Development.
* Motivated, self-driven and organized, with a passion for innovation and problem-solving.
