This is an exciting opportunity for experienced band 5 OTs looking to progress their career or an established Band 6 looking for a new role to further develop their skills and knowledge in Colorectal Surgery. The team is forward thinking and is led by an experienced Band 7 Occupational Therapy Team Lead. The post is based on the Planned Care Unit which is a cancer colorectal surgical ward.
Our service provides acute inpatient rehabilitation alongside safe and effective discharge planning for patients presenting with surgical colorectal conditions and procedures including input pre- and post-operatively, decreased mobility and functional ability after surgery, exacerbation of long-term conditions, recovery from acute surgical problems further impacted by comorbidities, and deconditioning. You will work closely with an MDT and medical colleagues to plan and provide effective rehabilitation and support discharge planning.
Our services are supported by an Integrated Therapy Lead. We are in the process of developing and establishing the rehabilitation services across the acute Surgical team to provide a streamlined patient pathway across our hospital to enable more patients to return home after surgery and reduce the pressure on our community hospitals.
The role includes occupational therapy input, and ongoing development, in a colorectal surgery prehabilitation service alongside specialist physiotherapist and specialist dietician.
Main duties of the job
As a Band 6 OT you will carry a caseload, which will include the completion of initial and standardised OT assessments, formulating client centred goals and treatment plans for each patient on your caseload. We endeavour to support your learning and development formally through a robust appraisal process and regular supervision and through informal teaching and training. You will also develop staff management skills with the opportunity to supervise and develop junior therapy staff, support workers and be part of the teaching / training programme within the wider MDT.
