SEMH Teaching Assistant (Secondary)

GSL Education’s Newcastle branch is seeking a dedicated and experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to support secondary-aged students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in our client schools in Sunderland. This role involves providing tailored support to help students manage their behaviour, engage with their learning, and achieve their full potential.
Job Summary:
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who have SEMH needs, providing both academic and emotional support. Your role will involve implementing strategies to support students' well-being and learning, working alongside teachers and SEN staff to create a positive and inclusive educational environment.
Key Responsibilities for SEMH Teaching Assistant (Secondary):
* Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, focusing on their academic and emotional development.
* Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs).
* Develop and deliver tailored support strategies to address individual student needs, including personalised learning activities and behaviour management techniques.
* Work closely with classroom teachers to adapt lesson plans and resources to meet the needs of students with SEMH.
* Monitor and record student progress, providing detailed feedback to teachers, SENCOs, and parents/guardians.
* Support students in managing their emotions and behaviour, using a range of strategies to de-escalate challenging situations.
* Participate in the development of school-wide SEMH initiatives and contribute to a positive school culture.
* Provide support during unstructured times, such as breaks and lunch, to facilitate social interaction and manage any issues that arise.
* Liaise with external professionals, such as educational psychologists and counsellors, to ensure a coordinated approach to student support.
Requirements for SEMH Teaching Assistant (Secondary):
* Previous experience working with secondary-aged students with SEMH needs in an educational or care setting.
* Knowledge of SEMH-related strategies and interventions, including de-escalation techniques and behaviour management.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
* Ability to adapt quickly to different classroom environments and work effectively as part of a team.
* Patience, empathy, and resilience when working with students who may exhibit challenging behaviours.
* Relevant qualifications in Special Educational Needs (SEN) support or related fields are desirable.
* Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with best practices in SEMH support.
* Enhanced DBS check registered to the update service (or willingness to apply for one).
