Job Duties
Position contributes to the public safety mission by directing daily activities of security supervisors and support staff as shift commander or Institutional Training Officer in an institutional setting. Coordinates and reviews the work of others on assigned shift to ensure a safe, secure, and productive environment. Leads, develops, and counsels staff. Responsible for work schedules, duty rosters and performance management system for staff. Conducts ongoing inspections to ensure compliance with security post audit, policies and procedures governing all aspects of institutional operations. Interacts with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public to maintain orderly and secure operations.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Operator’s License with driving privileges in the State of Virginia. DCJS Certification. Working knowledge of departmental policies, institutional policies, operating practices, procedures, and inmate programs. Progressive security working experience within the Virginia Department of Corrections. Working experience planning, scheduling, and/or organizing work for others to include timekeeping and duty roster management. Experience in the supervision of corrections staff. Demonstrated working knowledge of practices and procedures governing security and/or administration. Ability to receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions. Working knowledge in the use of firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls.
Additional Considerations
Advanced knowledge in Criminal Justice or related field, LEAD Graduate or equivalent applicable experience or training. Knowledge and experience with Evidence Based Practices. Certification as an instructor (General, Firearms, Defensive Tactics and CPR). Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office Programs.
