Job Purpose
The post holder will be an important member of the research team, led by Dr Claire Davidson-Jamieson and Professor Helen Minnis in investigating Efficient Fast Embedded Clinical Tools (EFECT) within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GG&C). The post holder will support families of children referred for a neurodevelopmental assessment to use a new innovative online assessment tool to see if it can help clinicians make assessment decisions more holistically and faster. The post holder will also support multi-disciplinary clinicians to best use the tool through skilled communication and ability to respond to requests, including linking back with families to gather additional information, as required. The post holder will also share their experiences of this family link worker role with the research team as part of the planned service evaluation. Appointment will be subject to approval through the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To communicate sensitively and in a way that fosters a supportive relationship with parents/caregivers of children referred to the clinical service for a neurodevelopmental assessment and/or mental health assessment.
2. To skilfully use IT systems, including email, navigation of websites and any other NHS record keeping systems, as required. Training for the online tool and NHS record keeping will be provided.
3. Willingness to spend time with families answering questions, understanding support needs and supporting individuals who may have difficulties with literacy or where English is not their first language to complete the online tool.
4. Use initiative to proactively highlight any recognised communication or practical challenges to the clinician to ensure they can best support the family.
5. To alert busy clinicians when the online tool has been completed by each family. This will require confidence and persistence to have discussions with busy clinician.
6. To screen the online tool to ensure questions are adequately completed, and to link back with families to gather further information, as required or if requested by the named clinicians.
7. To work within boundaries. For example, to recognise one’s own challenges and limitations and to stay within the role of the family link worker, as described.
8. To maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times. For example, the family link worker will be able to view some information suggested by the tool regarding possible neurodevelopmental diagnoses. It is the post holder’s responsibility to gather additional information from families, if required, but not to share the outcome from the online tool. It is always the clinician’s responsibility to discuss any diagnoses with the family, including information obtained from the online tool, following a full neurodevelopmental assessment.
9. To participate in regular feedback meetings with the research team, including participating in semi-structured interviews with the research assistant regarding the experience of the family link worker role.
10. To proactively make use of regular supervision check-in meetings with the line manager and the family link worker mentor.
11. To be organised and to demonstrate ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
