Job Purpose
School of Physics & Astronomy
To lead classes/sessions in subject specialism on the demonstration of practical exercises. Support teaching through the demonstration of exercises in line with agreed learning outcomes of the course. Lead sessions and oversee students carrying out practical exercises, providing detailed explanations of how the activity relates to the wider area of study.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Lead classes/sessions in the subject specialism on the demonstration of practical exercises (both small groups and one-to-one) and answer related questions, providing detailed explanations of how the activity relates to the wider area of study.
2. Assist and give guidance to students who are carrying out practical exercises.
3. Be aware of health and safety implications and maintain a safe environment, raising any concerns with the course organiser.
4. Contribute to the development of teaching material and workbooks.
5. Assist in marking student tests set by the course organiser using defined marking criteria where marking requires little or no interpretation.
6. Provide factual feedback to students and the course organiser as required.
7. Ensure that equipment and materials for demonstrations and exercises are prepared before the start of a session.
8. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
9. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
10. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.
Qualifications
* SCQF Level 10 [Honours degree] in a relevant subject or a cognate discipline, or equivalent.
* Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Expert knowledge of the relevant subject.
* Awareness of learning outcomes of the course.
* Previous experience of demonstrating to students.
