About the role (External):
Are you interested in starting a career that helps keep the railway greener and more sustainable?
Each year, over 500 miles of used rail, 800 switches and crossings, and 50,000 tonnes of contaminated ballast are processed at our recycling centres. Recycling the ballast alone removes more than 2,500 lorry journeys from roads and saves Network Rail around £5 million annually in landfill tax.
Our recycling centres are central to our efforts to reduce the costs of Britain's railways and enhance industry sustainability. Rail travel is the greenest public transport, and Network Rail aims to lead in making the industry even greener.
Our work involves managing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste annually. Our Westbury facility helps minimize both financial and environmental impacts by creating recycled products for railway use or sale.
Annually, about 650,000 used concrete sleepers are returned to depots. Of these, approximately 130,000 are reused on the railway, with the remainder sold or crushed into recycled concrete and steel products. This role offers a great opportunity to start your career with Network Rail, with a focus on personal development to become a valuable team member.
As a Materials Handling Depot (MHD) Operative, you will perform tasks safely, following safe systems of work, method statements, or other instructions.
You will check tools, equipment, and materials under your control for fitness and proper storage/disposal.
Once trained and competent, you will undertake related duties at the site, ensuring safety and efficiency.
The ideal candidate:
* Can work as part of a team
* Communicates effectively verbally and in writing
* Knows how to organize and control the safe and efficient delivery of work
* Is willing and able to drive vehicles as required by the business
