Our LAC nursing service is commissioned across Kent and Medway to deliver health assessments for all children, placed in care, by Kent County Council and Medway Council. Clinics are held at multiple locations across the county. Health assessments are held six-monthly for children aged under five and yearly for those five and over.
Main duties of the job
The Looked After Children's (LAC) Nurse will work as an integral part of a multi-agency service to provide a seamless pathway for the holistic care of Looked After Children in Kent.
These children may be under the care of Kent, Medway or another local authority, and will include unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC). You will aim to improve the health outcomes of Looked after Children in accordance with the Statutory Guidance for Promoting the Health and Wellbeing of Looked After Children (DH & DoE 2015).
In addition to providing comprehensive holistic health assessments, the role of the LAC Nurse includes:
* All LAC nurses are registered nurses with additional experience and, in some cases, additional nursing qualifications, such as health visiting, school nursing, midwifery, practice nursing, district nursing and sexual health.
* Nurses participate at LAC reviews, professional meetings and network meetings.
* Attend and participate in education plans.
* Participate in children and young person wellbeing groups in partnership with colleges.
* Provide packages of care for individual children.
* Work with other agencies both within and outside of health services.
* Direct referrals to GP and specialities.
* Liaise with multi-disciplinary teams as required.
* Attend local foster carer support groups.
* Participate with delivering the Solihull parenting programme.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (Child Branch)/Midwife with post registration experience in primary care and child development OR SCPHN HV/School Nursing; Evidence of ongoing CPD to maintain and further develop knowledge and skills relating to children and young people.
* Entry on third part of Nursing and Midwifery Register as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse at degree level; Paediatric trained or Mental Health Nursing Qualification; Competent to level 3 of the Looked After Children.
Experience
* Experience of working with vulnerable children and young people; Demonstrates knowledge of current health issues of children and young people in care; Demonstrates experience of working with child protection; Experience of delivering health promotion/healthy lifestyle programmes; Experience of working with partner agencies in relation to safeguarding children.
* Evidence of previous teaching experience; Knowledge/Experience of working with sexually exploited children and those that may have been exposed to radicalisation.
Knowledge
* Up to date and comprehensive knowledge of safeguarding procedures and collaborating in a multi-agency team; Statutory Guidance for Promoting Health and Wellbeing of Looked After Children (Dept Education and Dept Health 2015); Knowledge of the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the UN Convention on Rights of the Child; Knowledge and application of NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice; Comprehensive knowledge of healthy child development.
* Knowledge of County lines/ FGM/exploitation and radicalisation; Knowledge, skills and competencies of health care staff intercollegiate role framework (2015).
Skills and abilities
* IT skills - Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, Electronic Patient records; Excellent time management skills and ability to organise own diary and prioritise workload; Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills; Car owner/driver essential, subject to the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act (1995); Ability to work efficiently as autonomous practitioner and as a team member across clinical area.
* Audit and evaluation skills; Report writing experience.
