The Opportunity
We are seeking an Associate Director with an established industry reputation to lead our UK based Wind Engineering business. The role will be pivotal in developing Arup’s wind consulting services in the UK and internationally. You will be part of the leadership team of the UKIMEA Environmental Physics and Wind practice, as well as our global network of wind experts.
Reporting to the practice leader, you will plan and develop growth of the Wind Engineering business, including our market visibility, technical reputation and influence. You will be responsible for winning new Wind Engineering work, overseeing projects to ensure technical excellence and financially robust outcomes, and developing our staff/resourcing requirements. A key attribute of the role is to achieve growth of the UKIMEA Wind business in the next 12 months, both supporting Arup’s projects internally, and through liaison with client networks externally.
Is this role right for you?
We are seeking a candidate to provide technical and operational leadership to the UKIMEA Wind Engineering business, integrating this with service and skills development across the Environmental Physics and Wind practice. You will work across the different skills and services engaged in wind consulting, directing and commissioning studies on the effects of wind on the required performance of built assets and the comfort of their users.
Our range of skills and services includes environmental wind comfort, international wind codes, wind climate, wind yield assessments, wind tunnel testing and application of numerical methods and our work covers sectors including buildings, bridges, telecommunications and industrial structures, and wind energy.
You will present excellent people skills to form strong relationships across the global delivery teams for some of Arup’s most prestigious and challenging projects, providing wind expertise into the projects from conception to use.
You will drive innovation and technical rigour around the impacts of wind on our clients’ activities, sometimes working in situations not fully covered by codes of practice. Your influence will engender confidence and increase our work winning capability and internationally.
The candidate will have:
* Academic qualification related to wind engineering, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), climate analysis, microclimate design, statistical analysis, advanced analytical tools, environmental physics, structural wind and dynamics, building envelope performance or other related relevant discipline.
* A professional qualification(s), publications and industry recognition in Wind Consultancy.
* Professional Member of Wind Engineering Society.
* Experience in the successful delivery of wind related studies across a range of sectors.
* A commitment to rigour and technical excellence in the delivery of projects and development of tools and guidance.
* A high degree of motivation and comfortable taking ownership of designs and tasks.
* Commercially astuteness, with proven experience of delivering projects independently and managing others to achieve strong outcomes.
* Good capability in developing others, team management, project management and working in an exciting, innovative multidisciplinary environment.
* Strong client-facing experience in projects, and a demonstrable track record of winning Wind Engineering related commissions.
* A fundamental appreciation of consultancy in the built environment and knowledge of commercial aspects of design delivery.
