Shape the Future of AI with Purposeful Impact
At UrbanTide, we believe in creating AI solutions that contribute to a sustainable and equitable future. Our products help energy companies address fuel poverty, support cities in reducing emissions, and create safer, more efficient transport networks. As a growing team based in the Bayes Centre in Edinburgh – Scotland’s AI hub – we are looking for a Front End Developer to join us in guiding our product vision and creating impact.
Why This Role Matters:
In this role, you will play a vital part in realising our mission and developing products that support positive social and environmental outcomes. We’re seeking someone who values a culture of collaboration, cares deeply about their work’s impact, and naturally leads with empathy, openness, and insight.
Your Role and Responsibilities:
* Develop & Enhance Solutions: Work across the core platform and build new solutions, expand and iteratively improve existing frameworks, and collaborate with the whole team to identify and create best-in-class products.
* High-Quality Applications: Create engaging, data-driven mapping tools and real-time dashboards following modern web standards.
* Front-End Architecture: Collaborate with our team to build the next-generation front-end, to support our next chapter of company growth.
* Innovation & Expertise: Explore innovative ways to solve problems and become an expert in complex domains.
* Agile Development: Deliver features regularly, be comfortable with ambiguity and iterative development, and always push for code quality while balancing pace vs perfection.
* Team Collaboration: Participate in sprint planning, stand-ups and retrospectives.
* Quality Assurance: Conduct testing, fix issues, and maintain both new and legacy code.
What We Value in Our Team:
* Inclusive Collaboration: Our culture thrives on respect, open dialogue, and diverse perspectives. Everyone’s contributions are valued.
* Self-starter and can-do attitude: We are a small team where everyone is encouraged to suggest the best solutions. We treat challenges as learning opportunities.
* Flexibility & Balance: We offer flexible hours, remote work options, and support for well-being to help you balance work with other important aspects of your life.
* Impact-Driven & Purposeful Work: Our mission is to create technology that has a positive impact, and we welcome candidates who share this purpose.
What You Bring:
* Technical Experience: Extensive expertise in building web applications with modern frameworks such as Node.js and Vue.js.
* Geospatial Skills: Strong background in geospatial technologies, having handled spatial data through products such as Mapbox, Google Maps, Leaflet, and OpenStreetMap.
* Software Engineering Excellence: You’re an expert in developing and debugging complex systems, committed to engineering best practices including agile methodologies, test-driven development, code reviews, and efficient deployment processes.
* Data Visualisation: Proven ability to implement data visualisation solutions and turn complex data into meaningful insights.
* Communication: You’re a confident and thoughtful communicator, both verbally and in writing, able to adapt your style to different audiences and contexts.
* Continuous Learning: You like to contribute towards a culture of improvement and learning - continually learning and passing on your experiences to others.
* Growth Mindset: You're a problem solver who's always willing to learn and improve. You embrace challenges and are comfortable admitting to and learning from your mistakes. You love working with smart people and enjoy the fast-paced and flexible environment of a start-up.
* Cultural Fit & Curiosity: We’re excited to hear from candidates who share our values of purpose, inclusivity, and collaboration – even if you don’t meet every qualification listed here. Your unique perspectives are valuable to us.
Desired Skills and Experience:
* Exposure to web based design tools (Figma)
* Familiarity with CSS frameworks (Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap)
* Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
* Exposure deploying applications and Git version control
* Interest in big data manipulation and analytics
* Curiosity about AI and ML, especially with real-time data
What We Offer:
* Meaningful Impact: Every day, contribute to technology that addresses pressing social and environmental issues.
* Shape a Rising Star: We’re offering you a unique opportunity to shape and grow our organisation. Join our core team in setting the direction of an AI-driven company.
* Supportive, Flexible Environment: Flexible work options, generous time off, and a culture that values your well-being.
* Competitive Package & Growth Opportunities: Competitive salary, 35 days of holiday, your choice of equipment, and a budget for learning resources to support your professional growth.
