Posting Context Statement: The research aide position performs pre-established research procedures under general supervision from the research scientist in the wheat breeding and genetics program. The position will assist in planning and conducting field research designed to support all breeding activities. Specific tasks include seed preparation, planting, irrigation scheduling, maintaining, and harvesting plots, grain processing, data collecting, ordering, and stocking of materials and equipment. This position is also expected to supervise seasonal help and maintain safe working conditions.
Position Overview: The research aide performs pre-established research procedures under general supervision. When applicable, they are responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining research space and equipment, and assisting with receipt and inspection of raw materials along with ordering and stocking of materials and equipment.
Duties may include:
1. Operating electronic and scientific equipment
2. Collecting laboratory or field data while following existing protocols
3. Preparing materials for testing
4. Performing specialized or routine standardized tests
5. Operating, maintaining, calibrating, and sterilizing laboratory/field equipment
6. Cleaning glassware and work areas
7. Reading, recording, and filing reports and correspondence
8. Entering data and maintaining specimen logs, test results, and supplies used
9. Assuring proper labeling and paperwork for the receipt and shipping of specimens
10. Distributing, maintaining, and ordering research supplies
11. Other duties as assigned
Position Qualifications
Required Experience:
1. Collecting and recording data following pre-established procedures or protocols
2. Using a computer to collect and record data
3. Accomplishing goals or completion of projects in a team environment
Required Education:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent
Required Other:
1. Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
2. Possess an Idaho Limited Pesticide Applicator’s License or be able to obtain one within six months
3. Ability to travel overnight and to remote site locations
4. Ability to work nonstandard business hours when the workload dictates, i.e., evenings, weekends, and possible holidays
Additional Preferred:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Crop Science or a related field
2. Large field equipment operation, such as tractors, sprayers, 4-wheelers, combines and trailers
3. Hands-on research experiences in small grains cultivar development
4. Understanding of basic mechanics for combines, tractors, 4-wheelers, sprayers, threshers
5. Ability to work independently with general supervision and oversight to complete tasks
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
1. Must be able to lift, carry, and/or otherwise move up to 50 lbs
2. May be required to work with toxic, volatile, or corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances
3. May be required to work in adverse environmental conditions (dusty, hot, or cold conditions outdoors)
