Job Description
The BCH Firearms & Explosives Licensing Team have a full-time vacancy as Proactive Firearms Enquiry Officer.
The post holder will be working alongside 8 other team members and will report directly to the Intel Decision Maker.
The post is based at the department’s central hub in Monks Wood, Cambridgeshire. The role is fixed office working, so the ability to travel to and work from Monks Wood is essential. In addition to this, visits and inspections of certificate holders, dealers and clubs also forms part of the role according to demand, and so the ability to travel to various locations across BCH is also essential.
The primary role of the Firearms and Explosives Licensing Unit is to grant firearms, shotgun and explosives certificates to applicants who have a valid reason for possessing them, and who are assessed to pose no threat risk of harm to public safety under the provisions of the Firearms Act 1968, using a risk assessed approach and applying the National Decision-Making Model. Supervised and lead by the Intelligence decision maker within the unit, the proactive FEO role will have a focus on providing improved intelligence functionality to the unit, and identifying and developing increased proactive intelligence functions.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Review certificate expiry dates and take action to ensure holders do not go into illegal possession.
2. Assess the 24-hour monitoring system and act quickly following reported incidents to mitigate any risk.
3. Manage ongoing suitability of existing licence holders through intelligence led reviews, compiling reports to enable the Head of Department to make informative decisions.
We are looking for individuals who are self-motivated with a proven track record of risk-based decision-making and have the ability to work under their own initiative as part of a team. Experience in intelligence methods, interrogation of police information systems, interviewing, and statement taking would be a distinct advantage.
