Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is pleased to announce three posts within the Division of surgery. These posts are to commence on 3rd February 2025 until 6th August 2025. The post holders will work standard day shifts only with no on call commitments. These posts will suit trainees who wish to gain exposure to Plastic Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Urology or General Surgery. They are designed primarily for trainees who have successfully completed their FY1 and/or 2 training. These posts are ideally suited to those looking to augment their portfolio for career progression in any specialties. These posts offer the opportunity for applicants to develop skills and gain NHS experience in other areas such as audit and quality/service improvement. Prior surgical experience is not required. The posts will include training in competencies appropriate to the appointee level of training. Each post holder will be assigned an educational and clinical supervisor and are expected to undertake work-based assessments and document competencies for their level of training. Post holders will need to have evidence of achievement of FY1 competencies, via current employment in a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or evidence of achievement of foundation competencies at the time of application. Only a valid FPCC (FACD 5.2), GMC recognition of FY1 competencies or alternative certificate of foundation competence will be accepted as evidence. The post holders should have worked within the NHS for a minimum 4 weeks as a clinical attachment in any medical or surgical speciality including general practice. The post holders work standard weekday shifts and will not be on the on call rota, however there is the opportunity for post holders to pick up out-of-hours shifts on an ad-hoc basis via our bank provider. The Service Role Post holders will be required to provide a range of services and will be encouraged to undertake continuing medical education, and study leave will be available as per the Trust policy. The post holders will have the opportunity to attend departmental teaching every week. The post holders will work in collaboration with and under the direction of the Consultants and other members of the teams in the day-to-day management of patients within the service. Post holders will be based at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield with potential peripheral sessions at Dewsbury District Hospital and Pontefract Hospital. You will be expected to work within one of the following surgical specialties: - Urology - General Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Trauma and Orthopedics Posts will be assigned based on performance and ranking following interviews. You will be asked to rank specialty preference. We cannot guarantee a specific specialty. The post holders will work in collaboration with and under the direction under of the Consultants and other members of the teams in the day-to-day management of patients within the service. Duties primarily include:- - Ward rounds - Pre- and post-operative care of patients on the wards - There will be some opportunity to assist Resident Trainees with emergency referrals. - Assisting Consultants and Resident Trainees in the operating theatre - Attend out-patient clinics. These posts will include cross site working, and standard day shifts only with no on call commitments, which is compliant with working time regulations and the 2016 junior doctors contract, averaging 40 hours per week. During their tenure the post holders will further develop their core generic skills and contribute more to the education and training of the wider healthcare workforce. At the end of their tenure the post holder will have begun to demonstrate clinical effectiveness, leadership and the decision-making responsibilities that are essential for the next stage of their careers. The MYDoc Training Programme Educational Input & Recognition Doctors appointed to a MYDoc post will receive relevant educational input. The Trust identifies the following as educational opportunities: Core Service Duties Ward Rounds / Clinics Mandatory Training Teaching Study Leave Other departmental teaching and training sessions Supervision Meetings Workplace Based Assessments Audit / Quality Improvement Study / Exam Preparation Portfolio development The weekly timetable should include a balance of these activities appropriate to your grade, role and training requirements. You are required to maintain a dialogue with your Clinical and Educational Supervisor to ensure the balance of these activities meets your developmental needs. Doctors who successfully complete their training programme will be awarded a Certificate of Equivalence of Core Training from the Trust. Doctors will use established work-based assessment (WBA) tools to chart progress and keep relevant evidence in an electronic portfolio system. There will be an annual review of progress based on evidence within the portfolios including the WBA, multi-source feedback, personal reflections and CPD, covering both clinical, personal, and professional development and a Certificate of Achievement (appropriate to that year/level of training) will be issued. Terms & Conditions and Tenure Employment will be as a MYDoc FY2 Equivalent on Trust Terms and Conditions of Service. The post is offered on a fixed term contract from February 2025 - August 2025. Pay Scale These roles will be equivalent to a doctor on the Foundation Programme and will be paid on the equivalent pay scale. Foundation Year 2 salary value is £42,008 per annum. Visits and Contacts Candidates are encouraged to visit the Trust by arrangement where possible. Formal visits may only be offered to candidates who have been shortlisted for interview. Such candidates may be reimbursed their travel and subsistence expenses for one such visit only. Appraisal and Revalidation This post is not recognised for training and brings with it an obligation to engage with the process of revalidation on an annual basis. All our Trust appointed doctors are required to engage positively with appraisal and revalidation. The Trust has procedures that comply with national recommendations. As a Trust employed doctor on a fixed term contract successfully appointed applicants will need to have a prescribed connection with Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust via GMC Connect and will therefore have Dr Richard Robinson, the Chief Medical Officer at the Trust as their GMC Responsible Officer. Continuing Professional Development The Trust requires all its doctors to engage with continuing professional development, guided by the relevant professional associations or Royal Colleges. Time and funding is provided according to departmental and Trust policies, subject to approval through the clinical management structures. There is a programme of mandatory training which all relevant staff must complete as required. Research Medical staff are encouraged to develop areas of personal and/or research interest. This can be developed in liaison with the Trusts R&D department and in line with prevailing policies and research frameworks. The Trust is developing an expanding and outward-looking research programme. Educational & Clinical Supervision The post holder will have a named educational supervisor and be expected to hold regular meetings with them during their tenure to ensure appropriate development during their appointment. Teaching The Trust is keen to maintain its reputation for high quality training and to attract the highest calibre of trainee and career-grade doctors. All senior doctors are involved in training our doctors, students and other professions. Audit and Clinical Governance There is a rolling half-day clinical governance programme, and the audit meetings are well attended and are highly educational. The Clinical Audit Department assists with setting and supporting an audit programme for the Service.
