Do you have good knowledge of Transmissions Design or Analysis? We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Transmissions Specialist, from either a designer or analyst background to join our team at the Home of British Helicopters.
As a Transmissions Specialist working in our Helicopter Division you will be supporting both the UK and Italian geographies so although based in the UK there is the opportunity to work on our full product range and travel to other international sites.
As part of the Transmissions Systems Team, you will be involved in activities across our wide product range encompassing conventional helicopters, tilt rotors and unmanned air systems.
At Leonardo Helicopters, we are responsible for the design of the complete air vehicle and working within the team you will have the ability to participate in all phases of the product design life cycle from participating in leading edge innovation to supporting aging aircraft.
This role is based in Yeovil with the potential of hybrid working.

What you will do as a Transmissions Specialist:
A Designer would be responsible for the following:
1. Generation of conceptual transmission system layouts, detailed 3D models and 2D drawing for Transmissions components, including gears, bearings, casings, shaft and couplings utilising CATIA V5 using full life cycle considerations and concepts
2. Support; preparation, introduction and embodiment of product improvements, cost reduction initiatives and modifications
3. Transmission configuration control and build standard management
4. Preparation of reports and presentations relevant to the assigned activities
5. Preparation of specifications for vendor supplied components or assemblies
6. Support to Repair and Overhaul, Sustain Engineering and Manufacturing
7. Support the Sustain Engineering function with in-service and production issues
8. Preparation and producing initial stress analysis
An Analyst would be responsible for the following:
9. Support to conceptual design stage with preliminary sizing evaluations/activities
10. Prepare and perform Finite Element Analysis (component/assembly) utilising company software packages
11. Preparation and delivery of Structural Analysis reports
12. Present analytical results/conclusions on fatigue and lifing issues to senior management
13. Support preparation of specifications for vendor supplied components and/or assemblies
14. Support preparation of qualification/certification test technical documentation
15. Support to Operation’s Repair and Overhaul organisation and Sustain Engineering function evaluating in-service and production issues
16. Development of in house techniques and support to less experienced engineers
What we need from you:
17. From a design background we would expect you to have knowledge of 2D drafting and 3D modelling using CAD software (conceptual/detail & assemblies) and experience in 3D CAD using CATIA V5 and FT&A package
18. From an analyst background we would expect you have sound knowledge and/or relevant experience in Stress and Fatigue analysis
19. A degree in mechanical design
20. A detailed knowledge of gears, bearings, casings, couplings or shafts
21. Good knowledge of mechanical design (dimensioning & tolerancing)
22. The ability to prepare and generate reports relevant to the assigned activities
23. A motivated and proactive approach with the ability to problem solve
24. Previous experience in a mechanical design engineering environment
25. The ability to manage, plan and execute tasks to achieve timescales and costs
26. To perform in the role you will need to work well in a team and be flexible and adaptable
It would be great if you have:
27. Evidence of working in a regulated environment with knowledge of airworthiness regulations e.g. MAA, EASA or FAA
28. Knowledge of helicopter mechanical/transmission systems
29. Expert knowledge of Finite Element Analysis software packages (Abaqus, Hyperworks or similar)
30. Expert knowledge using CATIA V5 environments
