Maintaining the high forestry standards across Glenlyon, the Farmhouse, McGregors Cottage and the surrounding estate grounds and landscape. Supporting when needed the wider gardening and landscape team across Taymouth Castle Golf and Sport Club.
Discover Your New Path
As the Forestry Technician at Glenlyon you are hands-on in caring for the trees and surrounding land, preventing physical damage and minimising disturbance and competition for water, light and nutrients from other vegetation. Working with the Glenlyon Operations Director and estate team to preserve, maintain and enhance the natural landscape. Caring and managing the health of the trees, their safety and aesthetic appeal by combining your practical skills with a deep understanding of arboriculture and environmental conservation.
Developing and implementing forestry maintenance by inspecting the trees and assessing their health and stability and checking for any signs of disease or damage to ensure the trees thrive at Glenlyon and Taymouth Castle estates. Safely removing trees that are diseased, damaged or pose a risk to people or property. And at times responding to emergency situations such as fallen trees blocking accesses or posing immediate hazards, working efficiently to clear debris and restoring access.
Shaping and maintaining trees by trimming and pruning. Delivering expert advice regarding tree care, preservation and maintenance strategies and coordinating the safe transfer of trees to new locations when needed by using specialist equipment like chainsaws, ropes and rigging systems to preserve or safely dismantle trees. Promoting healthy growth by treating with botanical medicine to prevent or cure diseases.
Working with landscape architects in the development of tree related projects, supporting with rewilding areas of the estate to ensure the grounds look attractive. Assisting with landscaping projects, the preparation of ground, paving, simple construction, grubbing out and planting trees and shrubs. Working with the estate team in the upkeep of garden structures, fences, trellises and composting areas.
Felling and processing trees for firewood, chipping, fencing; planting and setting up 700 fruit trees in our new nursery; including supporting with landscaping management across the estate e.g. fencing, driving tractors and other agricultural machinery.
Surveying and maintaining records of the trees’ health and the maintenance needed. Looking at growth patterns and the treatments required. Updating the Operations Director on conditions, surrounding areas of the estate and environment; supplementing with regular photography. Maintaining an inventory of all tools and equipment used for forestry, ensuring that they are in good condition with parts or replacements ordered as required; faults, defects, risks, and hazards reported.
Executing a safe working environment and culture by complying with health and safety throughout the gardens and areas of operation including the use of PPE (personal protective equipment), tools, machinery, fertilisers, chemicals ensuring safe working practices to protect health, safety for all who visit the estate. Maintaining up to date RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statements), COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and MDS (Model Development Specifications). Ensure that waste is managed in accordance with Scottish Waste Regulations.

This is a superb opportunity and ideal if you thrive in a multiskilled role offering both variety and challenge. Previous experience as a Tree Surgeon or Arborist, in the same or similar role and/or estate environment. Physical stamina as well as working in challenging terrain, in all weather conditions. You have a forward-thinking vision of forestry with a knowledge of tree biology, common diseases and pests.
Delighting members, guests & visitors with a welcoming approach. Your enthusiasm and knowledge of trees and sustainability is displayed through excellent communication and a natural ability to build rapport and strong relationships while creating an enjoyable place to work. A full UK Driving License is essential, and the following qualifications would be a distinct advantage.
* Certification or training in arboriculture, forestry or related field.
* Proficient in operating chainsaws and other tree care tools.
* NVQ level 3 or above horticultural qualification or equivalent.
* PA1, PA2 and PA6A spraying certificates.
* Full UK driving license - You will be required to travel between locations.
* Cherry Picker qualification an advantage.
