Job overview
The purpose of the post is to provide a comprehensive medical equipment acceptance, repair and planned preventive maintenance service for Anaesthetic machines, Ventilators, transport ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP devices, Insufflators for the Trust, involving complex and non-routine activities. This post involves work of a much greater responsibility and autonomy and may include the supervision and training of other Medical Equipment Technicians.
To provide technical advice to clinical staff, managers, and clinicians. The work involves travelling to all sites where Trust staff and equipment are based; with a travel allowance payable if the post holder's own transport is used. The core hours for this job role are Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm. The post holder is also required to take part in weekend/bank holiday on-call rota.
Main duties of the job
Technical and Training
* Understanding of MHRA Managing Medical Devices, Medical Device Regulations and other appropriate legislations and guidelines relevant to medical devices.
* Perform specialist technical services for complex and patient-critical medical devices such as acceptance testing, planned preventative maintenance, calibration and repairs for Anaesthetic machines, Ventilators, Transport Ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP devices, Insufflators.
* Ensure required planned preventative maintenance and repairs are completed in a timely manner in line with CES KPIs and escalate issues when required.
* Participate in On-call rota, providing specialist medical device support during weekends and bank holidays.
* Provide expert advice, guidance and training relating to medical devices to clinical users, specialty leads.
* Ensure device asset register is accurate and up to date for specialist medical devices.
* Ensure technical and mandatory training is up to date and keep accurate training records.
* Monitor stock levels and complete stock takes as required by the Trust.
* Investigate required regulatory notices and incidents and implement agreed corrective actions as directed by Medical Device Safety officer.
* Support the Service Head in engineering training of junior technicians and apprenticeships.
* Participate in medical device training for clinical users as specified by Service Head & Clinical Equipment Training Co-ordinator.
Working for our organisation
Clinical Equipment Services sits within the Core Clinical Services Division and provides a variety of services to North Bristol NHS Trust, which include a comprehensive Medical Equipment Technical Support Service, a Medical Equipment Library and the Bed and Mattress Service. There are five main services: Anesthetic and Medical Gases, Electronics, Mechanical, Beds and Mattresses, and CES Support.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Communication
* The post holder will need to understand and communicate complex and sometimes sensitive medical device related information to managerial, clinical and technical staff, external suppliers, line managers, and other team members.
Organisation and Planning
* Plan and prioritise own workload.
* Perform routine servicing, calibration, acceptance and repair work with technicians, clinical staff and suppliers to ensure all devices are serviced and repaired in a timely manner.
* Exceptional time management and use of planning and organisational tools to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner.
Service Development and Quality
* Actively take part in quality and service improvement projects supporting Service heads not only within CES but across the Trust.
* Support the Quality manager and internal auditors in the implementation of ISO9001:2015 Quality management system.
* Address assigned corrective actions for any non-conformances and Datixs related to the section.
Financial and Resources
* Monitor spare parts and minimum stock levels for a wide range of medical devices ensuring prudent use of departmental budget.
* Participation in stocktakes.
* Review the order progress and escalate any delays following up with the suppliers.
Information Resources
* Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of equipment maintenance and service schedules on CES equipment management database in accordance with CES Quality System.
* Use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Health & Safety
* Work with CES Health and Safety lead and take on a H&S keyworker role as assigned by the Service head.
Professional
* Regularly update specialist engineering knowledge through in-house or external training.
* Monitor technological trends.
Other
* Work outside normal hours on occasion when required.
* Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the line manager.
* Provide support and assistance to other CES teams.
* Ensure workshops are kept clear and tidy and efficiently manage the limited space.
Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications
* HNC/HND in Engineering related discipline or ONC plus extensive experience
* Extensive Training in medical devices servicing and repair
* Extensive practical experience in electronic and medical engineering workshop practices
* Registration as a clinical technologist
* Experienced in the use of Asset Management Systems
* Valid full UK manual driving license
