Emanuel School is looking for a well-qualified teacher to join our thriving history department from September 2025.
As a Teacher of History, you will deliver challenging, engaging and inspiring history lessons to students across the school, helping them to achieve their full potential in the subject. You will create a challenging and stimulating classroom climate that will motivate pupils to learn, think independently, take risks, empathise with others, and perform to the best of their abilities.
As well as delivering excellent classroom teaching, you will also assume a pastoral role (as a form tutor, or as a co-tutor if an ECT) and get involved in the wider life of the school through co-curricular activities and outreach programmes.
You will be a dynamic and inspirational individual, with a strong academic background and in-depth professional and subject knowledge. Although you will ideally possess previous teaching experience at GCSE and A Level, we also welcome applications from ECTs and well-qualified graduates. The ability to teach a second humanities subject is also desirable.
History at Emanuel School
The History Department at Emanuel delivers excellent teaching that is academically challenging and stimulating. The staff are passionate about the subject, and there is a strong esprit de corps. Teaching covers a range of topics across British and global history, from the Vietnam War to the Norman Conquest.
The History and Politics Society meets regularly throughout the year, offering pupils in all years the opportunity to discuss and engage with historical and contemporary controversies. There are annual trips for Years 7 to 11, including visits to Hever Castle, Hampton Court, Flanders, and the Somme.
Working at Emanuel
There is always a buzz at Emanuel. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school. With a weekly staff briefing, half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, all of us are engaged in a lively ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims and aspirations.
Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining us should expect to do the same and share our commitment to the highest standards. At the same time our ethos remains unpretentious, kindly and practical, and there’s a strong sense of community and friendship at the school.
We aim to look after our staff well: we have an appraisal scheme with a focus on employees’ professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer salary sacrifice childcare vouchers through TEDS Premier, we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. Financially, all staff benefit from good pension provision and free lunches.
