Pharmacy Assistant Technical Officer, Band 2 (22.5 hours a week)
We currently have a part-time position for an enthusiastic, conscientious, and hardworking person to join our friendly pharmacy department in the distribution and stores area.
Duties will include:
1. Ward visits as part of our topping-up service.
2. Assembling stock drug orders.
3. Answering telephone calls for stock medicine orders.
4. Operating automated systems.
5. Assisting in Pharmacy Stores.
Previous pharmacy experience is desirable. Whilst no pharmacy qualification is required, candidates must be prepared to work towards an accredited Pharmacy Services qualification relating to stock management, which will involve being observed and assessed. Full training will be given.

The pharmacy department has approximately 240 staff. The 2 sites provide dispensary services to inpatients & outpatients, medicines information, procurement services, and full clinical service to wards; the onsite aseptic and manufacturing services are centralised at CGH.
Pharmacy is at the forefront of many exciting projects including an award-winning service provided by pharmacist prescribers in orthopaedic pre-admission clinic.
Within the department are specialist clinical teams; the Specialist Mental Health Pharmacy facilitates delivery of Specialist services for Mental Health & Learning Disabilities. The cancer services team provides a pharmacy service at both sites for oncology & haematology and satellite pharmacy.
We are a friendly, inclusive department who wish to nurture and develop our staff at all grades, from a mentoring programme for band 6 pharmacists to the development of pharmacist prescribers.
Ward Top-up service:
1. Regular visits to wards or clinics to check stock levels & re-order medicines where necessary according to a set stock list.
2. Check expiry dates.
3. Liaise with ward staff.
4. Return medicines no longer required to Pharmacy for credit or destruction.
Supply of Medicines to wards & Departments:
1. Computer data entry of ward medicines order to produce picking list for supply.
2. Selecting & assembling drug order for checking by another pharmacy assistant.
3. Contacting porters to arrange for delivery of completed orders.
4. Assembling orders from picking lists in order to meet transport deadlines.
5. Checking orders assembled by other pharmacy assistants.
6. Preparing TTO packs according to approved worksheets.
7. Ensure that all orders for external customers are completed in time for allocated transport and prepared in-line with Good Distribution Practice.
Return of unwanted medicines from wards & departments:
1. Emptying returned wards boxes of unused or returned items.
2. Assess stock for reuse and credit as appropriate.
3. Destroy medicines that are unsuitable for recycling.
4. Arrange for waste bin collection.
5. Unpack goods in the pharmacy stores.
6. Check received stock against delivery note and enter onto the Pharmacy computer or process using automated systems.
7. Put stock away in the correct location.
8. Restock shelves in the distribution area.
9. Other duties as requested by Senior Technician – purchasing and supplies.
10. Deal with incoming telephone calls for stock ordering and take accurate messages as necessary.
11. Transcribe fluid orders and book out the stock on the pharmacy computer system.
12. Assemble boxes of IV fluids for onward transport/porters (can include significant manual handling).
