As the Legal Counsel at Bede, you will play a pivotal role within our In-House Legal Team, reporting directly to the General Counsel. Your primary responsibility will be to offer actionable and practical legal counsel across a wide spectrum of areas concerning all markets in which Bede is active. Your keen business acumen will be essential in aiding Bede’s risk management efforts and supporting the realisation of our organisational objectives. In this dynamic and rapidly expanding business environment, characterised by an ambitious growth strategy, you will collaborate with professionals across various departments, engaging with an assortment of legal matters.
This is a hybrid role that requires you to be in our Newcastle-upon-Tyne office two days a week. Please apply only if you’re comfortable with this arrangement.
What you'll be doing
* Serve as a legal collaborator for designated Client Success team members, overseeing a portfolio of prominent client contracts within the lottery and online gaming domains.
* Assume ownership for the legal and contractual aspects of agreements, functioning as a legal liaison for the business, ensuring a swift and informed response.
* Take a proactive role in contract management, consistently updating pertinent stakeholders within the organisation about both existing and forthcoming obligations.
* Create, assess, negotiate, and offer guidance on an extensive array of agreements, encompassing software licences, SAAS contracts, and matters related to compliance. Additionally, address associated inquiries as they arise.
* Provide backing to the Compliance Department in the pursuit of licences for new markets.
* Aid the Compliance Department in formulating internal governance policies and aligning contracts with these policies as necessary.
* Participate in the new business development including Request for Proposals (RFPs), and subsequently, craft, evaluate, and negotiate fresh Platform Agreements with clients (SAAS).
* Supervise and execute company secretarial tasks across the group, assuring adherence to statutory and regulatory prerequisites.
* Furnish the group with insights on matters pertaining to real estate and property.
* Extend support to the People Team in all matters related to human resources.
* Participate in the identification and management of potential legal risks across various business functions, proposing preventive measures and strategies.
* Assist in the resolution of disputes, including contract disputes and potential litigation, in collaboration with external legal counsel if necessary.
* Stay up-to-date with relevant legal developments, industry regulations, and best practices to ensure the company’s legal strategies remain current and effective.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that data protection and privacy regulations are upheld in the company’s operations.
What we are looking for
Required:
* A Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or a related field.
* Qualified Junior Solicitor or Barrister in the UK with current practising certificate (1 to 3 years PQE preferred).
* Prior in-house legal experience is highly advantageous.
* Thorough understanding of UK contract law, commercial agreements, and technology-related legal issues.
* Proven experience in drafting, negotiating, and reviewing various types of agreements, including software licences, SAAS contracts, and compliance-related documents.
* Excellent legal research, analysis, and critical-thinking abilities.
* Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
* Proficiency in using legal research tools and Microsoft Office Suite.
* Ability to provide clear and concise legal advice to non-legal colleagues.
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders at various organisational levels.
* Leadership skills to guide and mentor junior legal team members if applicable.
* Proactive approach in identifying legal risks and proposing practical preventive strategies.
* Uphold the highest ethical standards and maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
* Familiarity with UK gaming and online gambling regulations, including licensing requirements.
* Familiarity with international legal frameworks and cross-border legal matters.
* Knowledge of UK data protection and privacy laws (including GDPR) and their application in a tech company.
