Your new role
Here at Hitachi Rail, we have a unique and exciting opportunity for a Train Control Systems Engineer – TCMS.
Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:
* .Provide technical leadership for train control, monitoring and supervisory systems (TCMS, OTMR & vigilance) on Hitachi’s range of metro, commuter and intercity trains.
* Support bids for new projects, analysing requirements, assessing their feasibility & complexity and authoring technical responses.
* Lead the definition of technical requirements for systems (SRDs) and supplier selection.
* Elicit, define and manage requirements for new rolling stock projects based on contractual requirements, internal requirements and legislation.
* Lead the design of system functionality and integration with other systems. Produce verification and validation methodologies for these designs.
* Provide support to / lead the activities of other departments including Manufacturing, V&V and Homologation to ensure the effective and timely implementation, approval, acceptance and entry into service of new rolling stock fleets.
* Oversee the design, implementation and testing of systems by suppliers. Lead fault investigations through effective collaboration and use of investigative tools.
* Ensure effective management of fleet configuration as designs evolve and changes are implemented using product lifecycle management (PLM) tools.
* Configure systems through the design, implementation and verification of databases.
* Lead changes to systems, liaising with stakeholders, providing written & verbal justifications, assessing & mitigating risks and defining & overseeing verification & validation activities.
* Assess risks, identify and implement appropriate mitigations. Treat safety as the number one priority always.
* Provide specialist technical support to colleagues in Service & Maintenance for the investigation of issues and implementation of complex changes.
* Provide technical support for discussions with customers including design reviews.
* Actively seek improvements to Hitachi Rail’s offering by identifying innovations. Lead / support the implementation of key innovations including improved modelling of system functionality and adopting hardware in the loop (HiL) testing as a core element of system verification / validation.
* Provide interface between British, Italian and Japanese Engineering teams. Some travel in Europe and to Japan is expected.
About you
* Trade-offs between manufacturability, testability, reliability, maintainability, cost, safety, human factors, interoperability etc.
* Understanding of the impact standards have on design.
* High-level understanding of the UK railway including stakeholders and technology.
* Able to adapt to working with internal and external stakeholders with a range of technical knowledge, cultural backgrounds and motivations.
* Ability to apply creativity, innovation and problem-solving techniques to system development.
* Identify, analyse, recommend treatment for risks and opportunities.
* Generate a physical, mathematical, or logical representation of a system entity, phenomenon or process.
Desirable skills:
* Rolling stock electronic equipment, especially train control, monitoring and supervisory systems (TCMS, OTMR & vigilance).
* Systems Engineering lifecycle processes (V-cycle).
* The relationship between verification, validation and acceptance.
* The elements of a project management plan including work breakdown structure, scheduling, and risk management.
* Identify, define, and control interactions across system or system element boundaries.
* Define operational data for monitoring and control of a system.
* Initiate design change proposals in response to system failure or degradation.
* Manage and control system elements and configuration over the project or programme lifecycle ensuring overall coherence of the design is maintained in a verifiable manner throughout the lifecycle.
* Define, coordinate and maintain effective and workable plans across multiple disciplines.
Qualifications:
Applicants with a range of backgrounds will be considered. Examples of the expected level of experience & qualification are:
* Level 7 (MEng / MSc or equivalent) and 2 years’ experience in an Engineering setting.
* Level 6 (BEng / BSc or equivalent) and 5 years’ experience in an Engineering setting.
* Level 4 or 5 (HNC / HND or equivalent) and 7 years’ experience in an Engineering setting.
* Membership of a professional body (e.g. IET, INCOSE) and professional accreditation (e.g. EngTech, IEng, CEng) or working towards is desirable.
